I swap between Google Now and Nova. Battery life on both is great

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly do the launchers do that the stock one doesnt? What's so great about them?

Think of a launcher as a kids playground. It's safe and good fun.

You can change how your phone looks (icons, dock, hide things,...). You can add gestures for different actions. You can change animation and transition speed and effects. And much more.

And, of course, you can go back to the stock launcher whenever you want and everything will be as it was.

A change of pace, also, Nova is much more customizable than stock. I can change themes, icons etc.

I haven't used it myself, but if you're looking for a battery sipper then the Nokia Z launcher doesn't seem to have any eye candy at all.

there are functionality differences.

Best thing would be to download and try both to see the differences. You can always switch back to stock of you don't like them

These are the features I use with my custom launcher (Nova) that are not available with the stock one.

Hide status bar and persistent Google search bar.
Change the grid of icons on my screens.
Widgets and icons overlap.
Limit the number of screens.
Lock desktop.
Speed and effects for transitions and animations.
Change individually icons and folders, even in the dock.
Change background colours for folders and drawer.
Two actions for icons and folders (tap or swipe). For example, tap will open the folder and swipe will open the most used app in it. .
Nova actions and activities for quick access (for example, tap will open Evernote and swipe will go straight to write a new note).
Gestures on blank spots of the screen (I use 4 different ones).
Organise the drawer with tabs and folders
Backup my setups.

A lot depends on how much customizing you do. If you're into theming with a lot of custom widgets etc you're going to draw more power than someone who just installs a launcher but just uses a standard clock widget and stock icons.

Sure thing. But you are talking about two different things. Customising with a launcher doesn't necessarily draw more power than stock. Changing icons and stuff will be neutral when using a good third party launcher.

On the other hand, using a lot of widgets will costs you battery life. But it's the same if you use them with the stock or a custom launcher.

Yep.

And once you mention it. Zooper is just great. I don't use themes and create my own widgets and I haven't seen much difference battery wise. I don't use weather info though, I think those ones are the big battery consumers.

Both Nova and Google have different customization features. You can try out the free version of Nova to see for yourself. In the end it will come down to personal preference.

Solo launcher is pretty simple. There a lollipop theme also. Wouldn't think it drains battery

And you forgot:
Ok Google from any screen and Continuous scroll through all screens and more. I have tried most and NOVA Prime is just that, Primo! Don't want to roll with the crowd the ATOM Launcher is next best.

Why not put your toe in the water Joe and try a few of these.

The reason I like google is simplicity. Any other launchers that don't require a ton of tweaking... Customizations can be fun but it is a time drain. I tried Aviate but it seemed a little buggy.

No no no see I'm not too worried about battery life, but I am trying nova launcher for the first time versus Google now launcher. I'm wondering what the heck the difference is beside the customization everyone says its better on battery than the stock Google now launcher...
