What Are You Doing with Your Old Phone (When You Upgrade)?

I use mine as a backup phonebook. I have two old phones that are meant for this reason. One is a sprint Samsung blade (which is a phonebook/alarm) and the storm1. That way if something (heaven forbid) were to happen to my phone I'd have backup numbers while I wait for a replacement (though with android you can see your numbers online in your gmail account).

My gf uses her old motorola razr2 (v9m) as an alarm since its a lot louder than her pre (plus the pre has failed in the past to actually go off).

Paper weight lol...
Nah I'm keeping my Storm 9550 for when I need to go travel internationally.

Mine goes into the "Cellphone Museum Box of Doom!" as my wife calls it.

It's fun to drag out every once and a while and look at the "cutting edge" of bygone years.

Sold my BB Tour for $64 to buymytronics.com. Might as well make some extra money by selling it. All I was doing with it was using it for an alarm clock. Now I found an app and stand that let my fascinate do it better.

I have a mint, and I mean mint condition iPhone 3GS currently. I will likely sell it via eBay or Craigslist when the time comes to upgrade in May. But after checking out some of the links people have mentioned, it'd be nice to get guaranteed money for it from those places. Maybe I will unlock it or jailbreak it to help rise the resale cost on eBay or Craigslist.. I've been able to sell my old phones to cover the cost of the most recent one I've bought. I sold my 3G unlocked for $250 to buy the 3GS. So, fingers crossed.

My first smartphone was a Blackberry Tour and I sold it on ebay with the accessories I had for a good amount.

Currently I'm on the Droid X and have no plans on changing phones, even with the new LTE droids coming out. But if/when I do upgrade, I'll probably do the eBay thing again.

Otherwise, I'll just keep it in my drawer for backup.

The day that I (eventually) upgrade from my Fascinate, I'll probably put it up for sale here in the Marketplace. Why not give the advantage to someone here before placing it up on eBay :p

going to give my iphone 3gs to my GF so she shuts up about not having a iphone!!! She had this crappy nokia for years. But she will be jealous again when the Atrix 4g comes out..my upgrade.

My Smartphone progression

I had Verizon HTC Incredible. Decided I had to have the Thunderbolt - bought it thru Best Buy with their new BuyBack plan (allows for upgrades at some discount before contract period ends). Then had Verizon store replace Thunderbolt SIM card with my original tel# and move my new tel# to the Incredible. So I changed my unlimited plan to a 'Friends & Family' at approx same cost - using Incredible as backup phone because original contract doesn't expire til mid-2012. Now my Incredible, which could barely make it thru a day, lasts for several days: Display Brightness set at 30%; Screen Timeout: 1min; some animations; no flash for notifications; Background Data sync off;GPS limited to VZW & Google Location Services; Email downloads frequency: every hr; download frequency: 3 Days. No Twitter/FB apps any longer. However, the Thunderbolt maybe lasts for about 6 hours; then i put it on charger -either in car (very slow) or at office and use it (phone calls) even while charging. Have a couple back up batteries, but it's such a bear taking off batt cover AND protective case, that using the charger works best; some 3rd party charger in car; BestBuy Rocketfish in office; OEM charger at night.)
The BB Curve which was used for backup is being donated to local womens shelter = makes me happy & is useful tax writeoff.

I'm a BB Storm 1 user switching to the Incredible. I pre-ordered and should get it tomorrow.

I wanted to see what everyone else who is upgrading (not just for the Incredible, but anyone upgrading phones) plans to do with their phones.

I've considered eBay, but I try to avoid selling on eBay due to the hassles and fees. Not knowing who is really buying from you, and if they are a scam artist or not, puts a lot of hesitation on it for me.

I am attempting to sell on my own on another technical forum. I would sell on Crackberry's forums, but I don't have enough posts over there to qualify.

If I fail at selling it on my own, I plan to use Gazelle to sell the phone.

For those not in the know, Gazelle offers a flat price for your device based on condition. They then resell it (I think on eBay, usually). So obviously they are undercutting you, but at the same time they assume all the risk.

I sold an old digital camera to them a few months ago and everything went great.

My Storm 1 is in excellent condition. Right now Gazelle is offering me $83 with free shipping to take it off my hands. I figure that's a pretty good deal. At least I consider it a good deal for a "backup" offer in case I don't sell it on my own.

Please note: if you end up using Gazelle through the link above, I do earn a small referral fee ($10) if you sell more than $50 in items. I talked with Cory (one of the forum moderators) and got permission to post this... so please don't flame me. I think Gazelle is a valuable service for reusing/recycling old phones that also helps you offset the cost of your new phone purchase.

How are you planning to get rid of your old phone and make money doing it?
