Personally, I can't decide between CyanogenMod or AOKP. CM is very stable (even the CM nightlies are more stable than any of the experimental versions of other ROMs), but AOKP offers more customization for the price of increased instability, though almost nonexistent. I've already tried multiple ROMs like ParanoidAndroid, Slim Bean,UltimaRom, and Jedi Mind Trick, but those were either too buggy for my tastes or drained the battery too fast for me to use as a daily driver.

For now, I'm sticking with CM10 stable for my handset, but I'm curious as to what other ROMs, obscure or mainstream, people are using. So the question stated in the title stands: what are your favorite custom ROMs for the SGH-T989? (AOSP-based or skinned versions of Android)

I'm loving slim 4.2.2 it's giving me da best battery life I ever had on any phone. I haven't had any problems with it

Slim? I find that particular ROM great, but it cuts my battery life in half compared to CM10 and for some odd reason, introduces lag to a degree similar to the amount found while using touchwiz ROMs. Also, graphical quality on most games is decreased, and accelerometer keeps acting up, even after installing the fix for it, something I never witnessed on CM.

Still, I might try using it again, as I didn't clean the cache while flashing it via ClockWorkMod.

U should flash DARKSIDE SUPER WIPE zip before installing a new ROM

Already flashed it before installing CM10, didn't need it afterwards, since updated CWM does it right already. I soft-bricked quite a few phones with Darkside Super Wipe already. Plus, I don't have problems with installing ROMs after clearing cache and wiping data when moving between JB ROMs.

While it is promising, I really don't need it.

Can you please send a link to download the ROM that you're using? (4.2.2 for T989)
Thank!

CM for me. Stable v close to vanilla. Wish they'd let me uninstall their music app, terminal and other things. But I use NOVA and either disable or just hide them from the draw.

The latest nightlie seems really fast. I've had mixed luck with Bluetooth, RRs and SODs. But 5/26 seems on the money so far.

You can uninstall CM's music app (Apollo Music Player) by simply deleting the .apk in /system/app, but Apollo Music Player works best with DSP manager. (Even more so with AC!D Audio Engine, which contains a modded DSPManager dubbed Awesome Beats)

Yep, CM10.1 has been a mixed bag for me, but I've had the same experience with Jelly Bean 4.2 ROMs. Perhaps our phone's hardware can't quite run the 4.2 Project Butter code too well or it's basically just bad coding on Google's part.

Which 4.2.2 custom ROM would you like to install? There are quite a few out there available for the SGH-T989.

Jedi Mind Trick, JB5 has been by far the best overall experience for me (4.1.2, touchwiz-based, which has WiFi calling).

It's flawless - rock-solid stability, best battery usage.

I've tried a bunch of 4.2.2 ROMs (Slim, AOKP, CM10.1) and they all have the same bluetooth issue that prevents me from using them:

With sound set to silent or vibrate, if listening to music over bluetooth headphones, when an incoming call arrives, music is suddenly diverted over the handset's speaker.

Hmm, Jedi Mind Trick JB5? I've had a GREAT experience with that particular Touchwiz ROM by far. The only thing I really don't like about it is that the devs seemed to have overbranded their ROM a little bit. (Lockscreen and pulldown notifications have their names on it. It would be much better to have it in a section within settings, not spread out all over the UI. God, what is this? HTC Sense?)

Nonetheless, it was the best TouchWiz ROM I've used, though I prefer stock TouchWiz rooted and deodexed for multiwindow mod. (Embryo was better but since it was based off a Skyrocket leak, the UI didn't appeal to me when it came to the slight differences between the T-Mobile one and AT&T one. Plus, Cymbaline kernel messed with the accelerometer.)

Problems with bluetooth on AOSP ROMs? Huh, I've only had issues with NFC refusing to turn on/off without having to reboot. Bluetooth worked like a charm on 4.2.2.

I take back what I said about JB5 being flawless.

After a few weeks of usage, had an app freeze which required me to pull the battery. On reboot, it froze on the Deviant Development screen.

Had to clean wipe and reflash.

There appears to be a lurking gremlin with Jedi Mind Trick 5.

Embryo is a bit more stable that JMT JB5 but a tad bit slower, which is why I prefer it over Jedi Mind Trick. What I did a while back with JMT was replace the SystemUI.apk with one from the official T-Mobile stock ROM and performance issues and freezes have stopped.

Any chance you could post a link to the SystemUI.apk for the T-Mobile T989 4.1.2 stock ROM?

Would be greatly appreciated!

Be aware that flashing this while using JMT will render any SystemUI tweaks made within the ROM's settings void since the stock SystemUI.apk will give you the stock notification bar.

Alternatively, you can simply extract the SystemUI.apk file from a rooted T-Mobile stock TouchWiz ROM and flash to your phone running JMT.

Remember to ALWAYS make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong. I recommend using TWRP 2.5.0.0 since it has a built in file browser and runs better than CWM IMO.

After a full week of using Infamous v2.1, I am happy to say this has been the best ROM I've used in my 2+ years of T989 ownership.

Flawless so far.

Battery usage absolutely awesome.

AnTuTu score was thru the roof @ 10009.

Huh, you've convinced me. I'll give that TouchWiz ROM a try and see how it performs.

I've only stayed away from ROMs based on Samsung's software because of performance, speeds and sound quality. TouchWiz makes playing accelerometer-reliant games such as Asphalt 7 Heat a nightmare to use and graphics for games ported from older game machines such as Sonic CD and Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (Resurrection) run erratically. Some 3D heavy games run better on TouchWiz though.

Also, internet browsing speeds are a bit slower compared to AOSP and there's that issue with tethering. Speaker sound quality is complete **** on TouchWiz: sound is loud but tinny. There's only little to no low sound output. On AOSP, the external speaker sound is more balanced. Call quality is substandard on TouchWiz with echoes emanating when calling someone unlike AOSP where noise cancellation helps A LOT with the sound.

(Info in 2nd and 3rd paragraphs are based on my personal experience. The YMMV rule still applies. ;) )
