What can the carrier see?

I am wondering how much the carrier can see on the phone. If FroYo is released for the HTC EVO unneutered, would Sprint be able to notice/charge me for using the FroYo tethering app?

well they will see your bandwidth usage. maybe also there is something in FroYo that tells the carrier than "hotpsot is enabled and used".

my guess is that Google doesn't want to piss off the carriers and the carriers are two steps ahead of you.

I will be VERY surprised if Sprint doesn't disable the stock hotspot in Froyo before they release it. I'm guessing, at the very least the stock hotspot will require some type of account setup in-order to use it.

Yea the bandwidth part I know I'm just trying to figure out how much they can see. Gekko, I fear you are very probably right. They will probably put something into the default hotspot app that will notify the carrier. Damnit, I really want a hotspot without paying 30$ a month. It's sort of offensive that they say the 10$ extra data is for truly unlimited data, but to use the mobile hotspot, which doesn't magically make you go over unlimited(being that it has no limit) costs more. I understand that using the hotspot the potential for data consumption is higher, but I wish it was less.. even 20$ might be better to me.

And Kyle, I know they CAN turn it off. I've read somewhere that they promised not to, though the post didn't cite any sources.

I wish they would just enable tethering for occasional use by default. I'm not going to tether my phone everyday, just once in a blue moon when I'm out of town and don't have good WiFi. Like a 500mb/mo allowance for tethering that accumulated when it was unused would plenty serve my needs. If I can't tether, I'm just going to end up trying to do the same thing on my phone I was going to do on the laptop anyway, perhaps less data efficiently considering I might have to download apps or find workarounds to do it.
