What could cause my phone to turn off mobile data by itself?

This has happened ever since I got my phone (Moto Z Play, Android 8), but I don’t know how often (not very often, for sure). Because I use very little data, and infrequently, it sometimes takes me days to realize that it’s been turned off. I have a 2 gb monthly limit and probably have never even used 500 mb of data in a month, so reaching my limit is not the cause. A web search and a search of this forum brought me no clues. Anyone have ideas?

Where do you see that it's off -- is there a toggle switch that's off? Do you have a toggle in the quick settings, or a toggle widget on the homescreen?

Where you checking the mobile data stats usage on phone or through carrier website?

The toggle switch in Settings->Network & Internet->Data Usage was off. I have neither a quick setting or toggle widget that can turn it off. It took me a few days to realize that it had been turned off (I finally noticed that I was only getting SMS messages), so I can't pinpoint the exact moment.

I had not checked my mobile data stats at any point (I never needed to). When I realized that my mobile data was off, I had to go to Data Usage because that is where the toggle switch is for turning mobile data on and off.
