What do you think about Allo?

Can it please work with my Google voice number?

Posted via the AC App from my Nexus 5x.

Wait, doesn't WhatsApp also do the initial registration/sign up using your phone number? Why is there a privacy concern with Allo doing it the same way but people FLOCK to WhatsApp without having the same concern?

I don't use WhatsApp, though I've looked into the process in an effort to help folks with it in threads here.

Also whatsapp is owned by FB. Idk bout you but I kind of feel like I trust Google a little more then FB.

Google Allo? But still, they could have worked better on the hangout app. To me google apps are resource eater I use as little as I can.

I think google have tried so many times with IM: Google messenger, then hangouts. Allo seems like something with 'new' features but still they need something like imessage to compete with iOS, whatsapp cos the market is full of IM clients

As for Duo, I tried it, seems like a nice video chat app esp. The knock knock feature

i Hope it's good as it was looking in google I/O cause i really want to have some good replacement for whatsapp for when i'll decide i want to stop using it. and overall from what i saw the google assistant look like a cool feature and it's seems like it give you more option to interact with messaging so i'm kinda looking forward for it.

Is this supposed to be the new RCS messaging app w/Jibe?

Hangouts was rumored to lose SMS soon.

Still, way too many messaging apps.

It's only way too many messenger apps if you're tryna use all of them. I really just don't see what's wrong with having several choices.

For Google:

Hangouts
Messenger
Allo
Duo
RCS/Jibe (TBA)

I'd like to stick with one. I understand if Hangouts is going to be primarily used for business but Messenger and Allo will confuse some of the non power users. Then Google just bought out Jibe and plan on using RCS messaging, which come carriers already have.

I have to use 4 different types of messaging (IM or SMS/MMS) apps.

Some friends use Hangouts
Some use regular texts.
Some use Whatsapp
Some use Viber

I'm all for choice but Google should at least narrow it down.

It's not about what you want to use.

It's about what your friends/contacts use.

it will be hard to get your peeps to switch apps. My fam was stubborn just to get DUO.

Not a single contact in my phone ever installed Duo. I have no intention of installing Allo. Maybe they'll turn it around into something that isn't half baked. Maybe.

It's current state: "a special messaging app that can only send messages to other people who install this special messaging app, it has stickers and different sized text, and can only work on one device at a time".

If I was going to design the least useful messaging app I would start with that description.

Google has what, 80% of the world's mobile market share? And they can't design an a messaging solution we can all use seamlessly?

It has to integrate SMS for me to use it. It's pointless if someone doesn't have the app.

The way Allo is currently designed, I don't think Google wants to take over SMS/MMS messaging. IMO, it's not worth it to put SMS/MMS into Allo because features like "SHOUT or whisper" and "Ingonito mode" can't and won't work over SMS/MMS.

Ok, I agree but I tried it and it's not ready for primetime IMHO. It needs to be able to become a default messenger app and it can't. That's a big fail, so I just uninstalled it. But, be careful installing as it seems that something has corrupted my “ok Google”commands. There are certain contacts that I can ask Google to call and it will open the contact, but it won't make the call. All of this was working perfectly fine before i installed Allo. So, now I'm looking at a factory reset to get it working right again.... Grrrr!

Pretty much what I think as well.

I have it installed. It's going to be the primary app betwen my wife and I, replacing Hangouts. But, I wish it could do SMS/MMS like Hangouts does.

I'm actually kinda digging it. The assistant is cool, I just wish it was fully integrated with SMS. I have yet to understand why people don't like SMS because everyone has your phone number that will text you. With other apps like WhatsApp, you can't get SMS alerts from anything like your bank or credit card information or IFTTT.

Add some input from Google Assistant into a group chat, it adds a whole new dimension, no more copying/pasting links and flipping out to your browser to look up basic info about places to eat or movie times. It's not a feature I'll use every day but it's a solid chat client and an:D amazing AI feature built in. I don't have to struggle too much to get my friends to try something new and SMS is for work people.
