What do you use for location settings?

I love Google now, it's so useful. The problem is that I heard location settings kill your battery. However for the time I want to actually use location settings, I have to go and fix my settings which is very annoying. What do you guys do about your Google location settings and your GPS? Do you need GPS on to activate Google location settings?

I use Google Location Settings so when I do a Google search it shows places in my area. You don't need GPS activated for this to work nor have I ever had it activated since I have GPS built into my car.
