What happens when i turn off background data on my apps

I have a Moto e4 and my data usage is high. What happens if I turn off background data usage for certain apps?

Welcome to Android Central! Those apps won't be able to access the web when they're not in the foregrond (i.e., when you have the app open). This would be fine for something like a news app (unless you absolutely have to get notificatitons about the latest breaking news), but would not be advisable for a messaging app, since it wouldn't notify you of new messages until you actually opened the app.
