What have you found in froyo?

It really sounds like all this hype was really not worth it, really, it doesn't sound like this update is as groundbreaking as everyone has made it out to be. A flashlight widget???? C'mon, I have had that all along, I want to know the differences in performance.... my Evo is already a high performance phone, how does froyo make it better? Will my battery last longer?

Sorry for the rant, just tired of hearing about silly widget additions and whatnot, I want to know the real advantages to updating to froyo.

The biggest thing Froyo does is speed up android performance. So your not going to see it, looking for add-ons and widgets. The big news with Froyo is the preformance gains you get in processing power from the JIT compiler, ect.

Thats why if you do a linpack score for the EVO in 2.1 you see scores around 6-8 Mflops and now in Froyo we are getting scores around 38Mflops. Huge improvment.

As for seeing it? applications load a bit faster, browsers are a bit faster, opening things like the camera app is faster, application drawer, menus, ect are a bit faster.

Yeah Idk why everyone thought this was gonna be a visual upgrade? I personally love the way Sense looks. But all the performance issues are fixed and the overall experience of the phone is better. Why would HTC and Google add a bunch of new features without fixing and/or improving the ones that aren't working properly? Gingerbread will be visual. But 2.2 is purely a performance and overall experience upgrade. What did people expect from a number like 2.1 to 2.2???

What about charging? Anyone know if the got rid of the phone not charging after it has reached 100 percent ?

Actually now I notice that after navigation it charge all night, it immediately drops the battery down instead of 20 minutes later. That tells me it has the same problem but just reads the status of the battery quicker.

Another issue is that now the phone gets hot quickly. I'm just using it to read through these forums and the kickstand is really warm to the point of being considered hot. I never had this issue before and sit reading the forums every mornings during breakfast. Anyone else notice that?

Major issue I'm having is that I can't download paid apps from the market now. Free apps are fine, but paid apps now all just say that the purchase is authorizing. It never downloads.

Have you tried running Google Talk?
I remember there was an issue in the early days with the EVO where the same issue was happening.

I think this is new (and haven't seen it mentioned) but the messaging app now gives a total message count next to each person.

I've skimmed the thread and not seen this reported. When I go to "Downloads" in the Market, only three apps show installed.Google Maps, iSyncr, and Act1 Video Player.

I have around 35 - 40 apps installed, all of which seem to still be present and work. Ideas on how to fix this??

I noticed that too. Maybe it's only showing the most recent apps? Looking at mine it looks like it's showing the last apps I've either purchased or updated.

You should use AppBrain for this and many more advantages. Download it now--It will accurately show what you have, and keep you up to date.

I saw the same thing, but then I downloaded a new app and the Downloads screen refreshed and now I see all the apps I've have downloaded in the list.

dunno if anyone mentioned yet, but batt life seems to be initially worse then when the phone came out unless its just me.
After I installed i had prob 50-60% batt life left at like 2:30 am. I woke up at like 8:30-9am with my phone off. I was like WTF. I turned it back on and batt was completely drained.

hopefully thats just an initial thing

H.264 Video Encoding Option Available

In encoding options for the video camera there is now a H.264 option. Initial tests show slight contrast and sharpness improvement. Audio quality remains the same. The file size from Mpeg4 to H.264 is slightly increased... 9 sec mpeg4 clip was 3.3mb and 11 sec H.264 clip was 3.7mb.

Update: H.264 is limited to 800 X 480 resolution! :( Bummer

Final Update: Oops... I recorded the 1st mpeg4 sample at 800 X 480. The mpeg4 at 1280 X 720 definitely is a lot sharper than H.263 and H.264 but H.264 is smoother when panning.

It would have been nice if HTC implemented H.264 at 1280 X 720. Oh well I definitely think the 720p quality has improved though. Would like to see some side X side before and after videos and new comparisons to the Droid X and iPhone 4 now that the EVO has Android 2.2.

That worked! All's good with the world! Except maybe video, have to test that.

Speech to text was updated too. (if anyone other then me uses it)
You now have settings for how it filters bad language. Before it blocked everything vulgar. now you can set it to filter lower, or shut it off.

Also you cant move all installed apps to SD. I could only move like 4 apps
