What have you replaced Messenger with for SMS/MMS on the Nexus 6P?

Currently using Hangouts for a Project Fi number and a secondary Google Voice number and had a question...

If I set Messeger as the default SMS app, that means I'll no longer be able to get messages (SMS/MMS/group messages?) sent to my GV number? The GV number will only get IMs from other Hangouts users, nothing else? I'm a bit confused by that...

Thanks

If you don't integrate Google Voice with Hangouts, you can opt to receive SMS on your phone's SMS app. Go into settings from your GV app and opt to recieve SMS on your phone. When a text comes in you will see two phone numbers. The one embedded in the message is the sender's phone number. There will also be a random 10 digit number. This is the GV "conversion" number. Reply or compose a message to this number to send a message back.

You can start a Google Voice SMS from your default SMS app without this number. If you haven't recieved a text yet, compose the SMS from the Google Voice app first. When you receive the reply, the use the new number for future messages. Add this number to your Contacts for convenience.

Sorry for the late reply...
Thank you for the information.
With things setup like that the default SMS app will receive both the GV number's and the Project Fi number's messages?

Thanks again!

Surprisingly, I love the stock messenger.... But is there a way to prevent certain contacts from popping up?

Since I'm on Verizon, I use Verizon messenger. Works on WiFi and all my other devices as well as my computer!

Google messenger. It works. No issues. I used to use Textra but Nova Unread counts doesn't work with Textra so I went back.

Material Messaging, customizable and very responsive with updates.

Major changes in the last few weeks where I almost left the app due to some bugs I was having, but all fixed now.

I actually like this one so far. It's free however, adguard is blocking ad traffic from this app so that's not cool.

I'm using hangouts as the go to for SMS/MMS and video calling. Nice to have one app that does everything that I need. Had a few issues in the beginning sending MMS with hangouts but updated the APN settings and no problems.

How did you get that to work on Nexus 6P? I have no icon for messages. I used to have an icon when I had Samsung galaxy but when I swtiched to nexus, I cannot directly message anymore. Either I have to use buddies. Using VZW messenger, it does not allow me to reply to a text

Used textra but ads annoyed me, didn't like enough to spend money for app. I love the Google messenger app, hangouts is for some alternative communications.

I use Verizon Messages. Although their recent update has broken MMS capabilities. So I've rolled back to a previous version. You can find the apk online for version 6.02.
The version in the Google Play Store is 6.2.3; I haven't had any luck with sending MMS, but chalked it up to being on Fi. I'll look for that earlier version and see if it makes a difference.

I liked how it integrated Glympse, but wasn't willing to give up MMS.
