I never unlocked a phone before so decided to give it a try with the note 8 I had that was gathering dust. No plans to use any other service at this time. just want to unlock it.

got my code from att to unlock it with the following instructions.

Unlock Steps - Use Non-AT&T SIM Card

1. Power off the device, remove the battery, and insert a non-AT&T SIM card.

2. Re-insert the battery and power on the device with non-AT&T SIM.

3. The device displays "Enter the device unlock code."

4. Enter the eight-digit unlock code.

5. Press OK.

Note: You are allowed five attempts to unlock before your device permanently locks to the AT&T network.

remove the batter???? they are a bit out of date...

They haven't updated those instructions for years. Just disregard the battery part. By now, I'm guessing that your phone is unlocked.

just unlocked successfully using a t-mobile sims. I am a bit confused. Now there is a t-mobile splash screen instead of att. took the t-moblie sims out and put in a verizon sims and the t-mobile splach screen is still there. Is there not a way to get rid of the splash screen? as I said in the op, I just wanted to unlock the phone. don't plan to put service on it right now. this is my first unlock phone so I really don't know what to expect.

just found a device unlock app on the phone. did I just lock my phone to t-mobile??? guess I should have read up on it a bit more before doing it. oh well, at least it is a unused phone. t-mobile is worthless in my area. you can only use it outside and will still get a weak signal. lesson learned :-(
