I am new to the Android OS. VZW had emailed me that I will have my D2 Global in my hands tomorrow (Wed 11/10). I was a Blackberry man for many years and have moved to the new generation.

Can you help me understand "rooting" and its importance. Should I root a phone and what is the down side.

I was a member of Crackberry and I found the users to be very helpful and then as I learned more was able to assist the newbies.

Check out this section here for information on" rooting" http://www.androidcentral.com/root
In a sense it is like administrator access to a windows machine. Do research before you root. If it doesn't seem like something you need to do then don't. It is an easy process and can be quite useful if you want to unlock the full potential of your phone.

There are two reasons to root. One is to make the device function in ways not possible before root, and two, customized ROMs, system backups, beta test leaks, tweak the performance....on and on the list goes. I use to flash new roms weekly. I have taken a break from it, and the chaos (though I love it!) I am just to busy with school. This summer I may:)

To answer your second question, no it is not important (unless you are missing functionality not already there) and it does void the manufacturers warranty. I would recommend reading several article on the process, because it is not a question of how (that is the easy part) it is a question of why? The last time I rooted was to get screen shots, change notification bar color and wifi for free!

First I want to thank you all for your responses. Now and after a discussion with a tech I trust at VZW, yes, I would like to root. He told me to d/l'd a program from Market Place A4D utility. But now I don't know what to do. Also he said that some of the roots are for different Androids. Any suggestions?
