What is "Sync" in the quick settings menu?

Can someone tell me what the "sync" button in the quick settings menu is in control of?

Automatically syncing your accounts like google which keeps your gmail, calendar etc up to date in real time. For best results with your account it should be enabled.

It syncs everything u have connected to your Google accounts and other accounts. It syncs your gmail, contacts etc..

So which is it? Does it keep your data between all google accounts synced, or does it constantly refresh your accounts?

Does this make a noticeable difference in battery life? Are there settings I can play with so that certain accounts update and some don't?

That's depends on how much you have to sync and how many things u have checked to auto sync. Turn on sync go to settings and click on Google and you will see things already checked, you can check the ones you want to auto sync so that way every time you turn on sync it will only sync those checked items.
