What is the difference between GSM and CDMA?

Do they have to take anything with 2G and 3G? I was reading a post on this website and I found a few words which incliude GSM and CDMA Carriers Like verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T? I have never heard these before.

Each technology has pros and cons.

As for not hearing about them before, don't feel bad. Most people are in the same boat. It's not until you usually read a forum that you encounter the terminology.
