What is the point of root and is it worth it or not

Re: Rooting Question

Note: I am inexperienced and lack knowledge on this rooting thing.

I rooted specifically because Sprint put a 5gb limit on wifi tethering.

I originally used CM7 with an app called Wifi Tether - it seems to come and go from the Android Market, but Google "Wifi Tether" and it is the first result. This combination was unstable when I was tethering, though.

So I switched to PoolParty 1.3 and Matr1x - based on Paul's endorsement. This combination seems more stable and overall less annoying to try to use the tether app.

Re: Rooting Question

looking at the MIUI web site, the stuff they show one can do looks awesome.

Edit 1:Going to try CM first like you said, I'll post when im done, to let you guys know if everything went fine or not.

Edit 2:Installed CM 7.1.0 went well I guess, Doesn't feel different. Kinda bumbed that the one thing I wanted from this mod doesn't really work but that's ok.

What is it that doesn't work? The difference is in the subtle additions that really were missing from Android in the first place. A lot of those things that were missing seem to be, for the most part, added into ICS now. Which is good. Give them more time to work on things that are better :).

the camera touch focus doesn't seem to be working, and that's one of the reasons why I went with cm

I do like that I can add more home pages and themes, and the app catalog and lck screen (haven't figured out if I cab put more options on the lock screen besides unlock and phone call)

I also noticed that the signal in my house isn't as strong as before. example, before I could have 3-4 bars in my house now I'm at 1-2.

the wimax widget thingy in the status bar makes the status bar force close.

Right now I am using "wifi tether for root users" tested it once and it seems to be working just fine, also using PdaNet for usb tethering (I am using it now as I type this)

Is there an app out there that will boost wimax signal??

The one thing I don't like about CM7 is that when it switches from 4g to 3g and 3g to 4g there's a lag time were I don't have internet, (I dont like this cuz in my house I connect/disconnect to 4g all day long)

From the last time I used Cm7 4g Toggle wasn't working as it wasn't meant for WiMax.

Weird that your getting less signal. I've never had that problem with Cm7.

FYI: If, you try MIUI the touch to focus works; and, if you find it to iPhoney for you - you can download a different launcher (IE Go Launcher) from the market which will bring it back to normal looking Android. That's what I did when I used MIUI.

MIUI has some really nice "replacement" stock apps.

I actually went back to the old ROM and found it that its just me I get the same signal, MIUI was way to iPhoney for me I went back to CM7 right away.

I just ended up taking away that option from the status bar.

Yea thats what most people do. There is a buit in wifi tether in cm7. Did you have any luck with that? I never did.

I don't even see the app for it unless its a moded one that the phone has, like the one under " wireless n networks " but I've been using PdaNet all day and it works just fine.

Edit 1: the only problem I'm having with it is that since the phone has some lag time when connecting and disconnecting to 4g there's a moment were I have no internet... I found out that the only place in my house I have good 4g connection (2 bars average) is in my bathroom lol.

To get the native tether working using the stock ROM I downloaded the "crespo4gtetherfix" I don't remember where I got it from but that's the name of the file. I couldn't get that fix to work with cm7 but its supposed to work.

Edit 1: I had to turn off 4g to get it to work on the stock. Didn't try that on cm7.

Edit 2: speed test says I have 5.92 mbps do and .59 up with 4g outside which doesn't help me lol

Here is that file your referring to from Pete Alfonso for the tethering fix. Note, it does work even on the latest 2.3.7 builds even though I think the latest posts on the thread below were as of 2.3.5/2.3.6

Peter Alfonso: Download: Tethering Fix For Nexus S 4G

Re: Rooting Question

You could.

Is there any ROMs or Kernels that will boost my "antena" (Want to get better 4g signal inside my house)

No. The radio controls your signal. There have been 2 radios released since they fixed the signal issue - radio 5 and radio 1. You could try flashing one of those if you don't have it already

Re: Rooting Question

Where you on the latest Android 2.3 build from Sprint? You should be on Baseband d720sprke1. (Under about phone in settings.).

If not the easiest way, the only way I've done it really, is the go back to stock and get the OTA from Sprint to the phone. Install it and switch back to your rom. When you change roms, etc with CWM it never touches your radio.

PM'd. It's different for everyone - try both 5 and 1 and check your signal in various places and compare

Completely unnecessary lol.

Radios are flashable zips.

Is there a way to check what version if any I have?

What about the RPKD8 one?

Lists under about phone under the baseband heading.
If your rooted and don't have rom manager installed download it and check under the rom updates and look under Pete he has them in flashable zips
