What is the small "roof" above the lower row of applications on android display?

That's a "tip" that you can swipe up to access your app drawer.

It also acts as a subtle separator between the Favorites row at the bottom and the rest of the homescreen that changes when you swipe.

I can do this swipe at any point in the display. I can also swipe to the right and to the left. I find it Unnecessary.

It's just a design decision. If you don't like it, consider installing a 3rd party launcher like Nova (which does not have that).

Because that section of my background is relatively light, I had to look to see it there.
