That could be a bad battery (it starts, shuts down, the battery comes back, it restarts, etc.) or it could be corrupt firmware.

Try booting into recovery or download (one of the volume buttons + Home + Power) (it doesn't matter which volume button - up will boot into recovery, down will boot into download) to see if the battery can keep the phone on for a minute or two. If it can, it's probably corrupt firmware, and you'll have to reflash the ROM. See [Samsung] How to flash Stock ROM via ODIN. Samsungs are easy to reflash, you'll just die of boredom waiting for it to set up after it flashes. Have a good TV show to watch or something.

I can't remember if this device has a removable battery. If it does, it's possible that the battery has swollen and can shift around, creating a disconnect, that mimics a reboot
