I have been getting this symbol which is a circle with a plus sign inside it. It is greyish and comes accompanied by ads or suggested apps. What could be causing it?

There is an adware pinned to an app you downloaded. The next time you get an alert, pull the notification shade down and long press that alert. It should point which app, probably a game, so that you can possibly uninstall it.
