what legitimate defense does HTC have for putting MicroSD card slot in the One for just one country?
(while the rest of the world get HTC One phones without MicroSD slots)

(1) cost
(2) demand by Google
(3) kowtowing to the commies
(4) bloody doesn't care
(5) taking customers for granted
(6) want to have negative quarterly report in a few months
(7) lack of space on the phone
(8) don't want to make moeny by seling more One phones
(9) aesthetics
(10) all of the above

In China most families only use one phone. Their cell phone is considered their "home phone". Therefore they have a reasoning for having multiple sim slots so other people in the house can use the phone, and they have a reason for SD cards so each specific user can swap out their SD card info on the fly. But the phone is no longer zero gap in china anymore and does not look as great as the US model. Thats also the reason that China gets the HTC Mini which is basically a bluetooth 90s phone that you can use to make calls and text from that can be sent directly from the One. So you leave the One on the counter yet everybody in the house has an HTC Mini and can make calls from their room, thus only having to have one cellular device. Hence China only has one device per household

Any legitimate answer given by anyone on this forum will likely be immediately dismissed by you but here goes:

Maybe HTC never originally designed the One to have a microSD card slot but one customer demanded that it have expandable memory so HTC made it so.

Well someone seems to be in a bad mood...

To quote community, "You shouldn't have to give in to mediocrity to placate the masses". HTC made a calculated decision on the One, the version that is apparently being released in China with a second sim slot and a micro SD card slot removes the uni body design. Could they have built every HTC One to be exactly like the Chinese version? Of course! But then I have to ask, what the hell differentiates them from Samsung if they did that? I absolutely love my One, and this is after I've worked with several Samsung devices and hated the feel of them each and every time. I would choose durability and a well thought out design over a micro SD card slot any day.

HTC clearly has some of the dumbest business minds around. I personally am not bothered by the sd card, but it would given the one more of an edge. I mean if they can put it in one, they can put it in all.

Some people prefer to not have a sd card. I know it's hard to believe..I have bad memories of having my cards corrupted and having to reformat every couple years or losing my card. I prefer cloud storage and a more uniform phone.

Using it would be optional.

I like HTC, but I find it curious that they always seem to find strange ways of making the least amount of profit. :)

do these companies actually give a rat's [rear end] about customer demands? if that were the case, Apple would be putting MicroSD card slots in iPhones sold in China, no? :D

Clearly you don't understand how the industry works. Verizon didn't want the One as is and may or may not release their own version as a Droid. AT&T demanded the 64GB version as an exclusive. Carriers around the world hold all the cards. Only Apple and Samsung can tell them what to do. HTC lost that ability long ago. They designed the One NOT to have an microsd card and the Chinese carrier said change it; China is too big a market for HTC to blow off and so they changed it. HTC did not want to go in that direction for the rest of the world, and rightfully so. Microsd cards are to 2013 what floppy disks are to... 2013.

I think it's funny how even Google, with their Nexus devices, is steering away from memory expansion and yet the 15 year-old's of the world still demand it. Fortunately, intelligent adults know how to get by without it. I laugh every time I hear someone say they have to have 64-128 GBs on their phone. No. You don't. You are not going on the first manned mission to Mars. You will never find yourself stranded in the Sahara. Riding the bus to school does not require 50 HD movies and 10k songs. Get over yourself. And if it's a dealbreaker, bye-bye. You can be replaced. A great quality phone like the HTC One cannot. Here endeth the lesson.

It would just give them one extra advantage.

Bought a 16 GB nexus4 I was nervous about no SD card lack of storage but guess what no more having no SD card is a godsend no more worrying about which data guess where. I keep some TV shows and movies on here and after words I delete. No big deal.

I couldn't care less about SD card expansion slot. I have 27 GB in Dropbox, 50 GB in Box, 105 GB in Google drive, 25 GB in SkyDrive. All my music is in the cloud, all my pictures are in the cloud. I have unlimited data. Life is good.

I love that you seem to think of yourself as some sort of fly on the wall privy to the negotiations that have gone on between companies. You state all that as fact, yet you could not possibly know all that. Talk about something to laugh at! As for needs, just because you do not have additional storage needs, does not mean that others do not. The option should be there.

In this day and age, the vast majority of people don't care about removable storage. Welcome to the vocal minority. Please move along.

The sd card would be extra to the in built storage. If you don't need it you would not use it.

I've been to China a few times, the mobile market there is quite different to any other country I've been to.

The key here is not the microSD card slot but the dual SIM slot. The ability to have more than 1 SIM and to quickly swap out SIMs is seen by many as an important / almost critical feature.

In China, dual SIM slots is a real necessity for people who travel inter-city / inter-state as your SIM is not only carrier specific but also city / region specific. Someone who travels regularly between Beijing and Shanghai will most likely have 2 SIM cards, one for Beijing and one for Shanghai.

Different markets have different requirements. For example where I am now, NFC is not used / accepted anywhere so no one cares about it. But in Japan for example, it would be an important / critical feature of a phone.
