what legitimate defense does HTC have for putting MicroSD card slot in the One for just one country?

You should quit asking for a Real reason because NO ONE HERE KNOWS, and probably never will. People have given their speculative guesses, which you aren't happy with, but unless someone on this forum is on the design board for the One, no one knows the "real" reason. So really it's pointless to ask.

What part of Japan being the subject now was lost on you? Asking the question for China was weeks ago. And i have not replied since getting a satisfactory answer. Asking about Japan is a new issue and was...yesterday. One time. Wow....how awful.

:smh: you have seen anything remotely close to rude yet, trust me. I've been following along, which is why my response could be to anyone of your posts. See I do know what I'm talking about enough to know that whether you ask about China, Japan, Croatia, India or Liechtenstein, the answers will all be relatively the same. And really it doesn't matter.

Clearly you don't understand how the industry works. Verizon didn't want the One as is and may or may not release their own version as a Droid. AT&T demanded the 64GB version as an exclusive. Carriers around the world hold all the cards. Only Apple and Samsung can tell them what to do. HTC lost that ability long ago. They designed the One NOT to have an microsd card and the Chinese carrier said change it; China is too big a market for HTC to blow off and so they changed it. HTC did not want to go in that direction for the rest of the world, and rightfully so. Microsd cards are to 2013 what floppy disks are to... 2013.

I think it's funny how even Google, with their Nexus devices, is steering away from memory expansion and yet the 15 year-old's of the world still demand it. Fortunately, intelligent adults know how to get by without it. I laugh every time I hear someone say they have to have 64-128 GBs on their phone. No. You don't. You are not going on the first manned mission to Mars. You will never find yourself stranded in the Sahara. Riding the bus to school does not require 50 HD movies and 10k songs. Get over yourself. And if it's a dealbreaker, bye-bye. You can be replaced. A great quality phone like the HTC One cannot. Here endeth the lesson.

I like and agree with your points except the part about not needing more storage. Everyone is different and just becuase you don't need the storage doesn't mean no one else does. I'm glad HTC chose to rise thier internal storage capacity, that tells me they are looking out for the consumer.

Obviously there are some people who do care. I honestly do not know why some of you seem so threatened by discussion or asking questions. Japanese carriers are control freaks even more than USA carriers. AU (frequently referred to as KDDI in this site, although kddi is just the parent company and au is the actual carrier) probably required HTC to add the card. All the previous HTC phones on au had it, even the HTC J which was a japanified One S with waterproofing, removable battery, microsd, different ui, made of plastic ....

Actually myself I'd jump on this HTC one, if it was waterproof. I guess they couldn't make the metal phone waterproof though, and didn't want to make a plastic version just for the Japanese market...

I couldn't care less about SD card expansion slot. I have 27 GB in Dropbox, 50 GB in Box, 105 GB in Google drive, 25 GB in SkyDrive. All my music is in the cloud, all my pictures are in the cloud. I have unlimited data. Life is good.

I'm sorry but this just flat out sucks as an alternate option, especially when you have a carrier like Sprint and the 3G network is dreadful. Streaming everything is just plain misery....some fail to realize that not everyone lives under the same situations. And on top of that, I have to go through the trouble of uploading 30 gigs of music just to be able to listen to it when I can just use the 32 gig on board storage as well as a 64 gig micro sd and not have to worry about all of that nonsense. The ironic thing about it is, HTC seems to be the only major Android phone that elected to attempt to go the Apple route with the non removeable battery and non removeable storage and it doesn't seem to be working out for them well at all. There are those that don't care about that but obviously a ton that do.

Hmmm, I didn't realize a survey had been done of every single user of this site regarding their knowledge of Japanense culture and phone carrier practices. I also didn't realize that you spoke for everyone here.

It is like those unlimited backup plans like carbonite or crashplan. You may think it is great in theory but I can tell you 200gigabytes of data with most people's average upload speeds is going to take a good month or so and that is at theoretical max bandwidth.

My experience with sd cards has never been that pleasant. I had one die on me and data got corrupted and unusable on another. 32Gb is a decent amount of storage and there is a 64Gb option too. If I take videos, I will always transfer them to my laptop even if it is after a few days. I don't see what the point of keeping everything from the beginning of "time" on your phone is. And with all the cloud services available and things moving to online, I doubt on board storage will increase in the next few years.

p.s. I don't want a removable back. I like the fact that it is all one piece.

100Gbs speeds? What are you planning on doing? I think it's pretty standard that people will have access to wifi at some point during the day. Just allow it to back up on wifi only.

You brought up cloud storage. The data has to get to the cloud first. I know people who have taken every cd they have ever bought and ripped them through itunes. Imagine a person with a 10K song collection who wants to have access to their music anywhere. If you are thinking big picture then you have to realize our internet speeds aren't that great for the cloud. Your bandwidth is limited. Even at the best Fios has a 35mbps up speed. Even if your cloud storage supported that upload speed (doubtful) a large collection would still take days. There is countless people who have terabytes of data, whether it be music, photos, home movies, etc.

Now using the cloud argument, now that I don't have a sd slot so I need to spend this time uploading my music collection first.

Let's use 64 gigabytes of music for example. The average upload speed in the United states is 1mbps. So if you were running max upload it will take around 176 hours to get that data to the cloud. That is if you were running the max at perfect conditions. Realistically if you do another things on the internet while uploading, you will slow down the process. If you are part of a household your internet will be tied up by everybody accessing it and you may have to only upload at night when people are sleeping so do not complain about how slow the internet is.

Until we get faster speeds, cloud usage isn't that great for data consumption for some of the reasons why people would use a sd card for in the first place.
