What phone would you offer for first time Android user?

I am not a fan of Samsung products. I don't see myself using Note. Thanks for reply, though.

Nexus 5 for dabbling. Something inexpensive but still potent. The 5X if the person is a bit more committed.

I'm going either Nexus or Motorola for Android the way Google intended. I'm guessing that's why you're not interested in a Samsung device, what with the heavy skin on top? I've heard Sony has a light skin so that would make sense too.
