What should my next phone be? Currently on a Droid MAXX w/ VZW UDP

[AC Question]

I am currently on VZW UDP and want to keep it. My average data user per month is approx 12GB (unregulated, meaning I don't try to reduce). I'd like to try to by a new phone outright and am looking to spend around $300.

I'm looking for:
Better performance than my current phone (Droid MAXX)
At least equivalent camera or better
Must be stock or near stock Android (or at least a compelling reason to get a skinned version)
I don't expect latest and greatest for $300, but just need "good"

I'm willing to upgrade off of my UDP if there is a can't-miss phone or deal going through VZW normally.

Hi, this is my post, I'm registered now. I keep seeing Nexus devices going on sale and so forth. I've been out of the phone game for a while and wanted to get a feel for the current phone line ups. Thanks!
