What should/shouldnt be backed up/deleted/frozen?

As of 2/21/12, I Just rooted my bionic. I had some questions and wanted some opinions on some things.


1)for titanium backup or titanium backup pro, where are these back up files being stored? the magical cloud? a server that anyone has access to somewhere? my sd card?

2) Its pointless to delete any bloatware since verizon throws out updates willy nillie and you need to unroot, reinstall that bloatware crap in order to update, then reroot(assuming theres a way to do it after the update). What would you say are the best things to back up, and what are the best programs/aps/whatever to freeze in order to achieve optimum performance from the bionic and to be in the safest place in case something happens/a new update comes out and i need to go through all that garbage again?

3) What are some of the benefits of rooting that are super useful? Please give app names (if allowed) and specific examples. (And price if you actually paid for them)

4)what are some things i need to watch out for?

these are peoples opinions so dont say "read the forums", i was asking what people are thinking recently and there experiences.

Why waste the time to just tell me to read above when it clearly says"peoples opinions, don't tell me to read the forums". and plus they only talk about what can and can't be deleted. I plan on keeping everything, just freezing or backing up certain ones. I'm sorry if this bothers you.

Because some people like to troll people and say nothing productive at all and think they're awesome for doing so.....welcome to the internet =D that being said.... now onto answers =D

1) sd card

2)you can uninstall bloatware, speaking from experience I had everything uninstalled and my phone rooted and I did an OTA update and kept root. sure all the bloatware apps were back, but I just uninstalled again. good to go.

3)Titanium Backup Pro is well worth the couple bucks for your coupe hundred dollar phone, sure there are free options, but this make SUPER HUGE shortcuts and is really really easy to use. the free apps make you go through TONS of steps to do things and you will spend tons of time doing things compared to 2 seconds with TBPro. Get AdFree, blocks all adds (you need to update the free version constantly) but hey its free, other than that, just go to Android market, search "root" or "rooted" and just start browsing apps =) LBE PRIVACY GUARD is the best, it controls what apps are trying to access your personal info and you can control what apps/companies see about you.

4)Just dont install apps if you dont know what they do, you can mess up your phone if you have too much control with too little knowledge =D

5)Ignore people who are too dumb or dont have the time to properly answer you, TROLLS LOVE this site and love to not help out new peoeple, most of us here will be happy to help

For 1: The backups are stored on the SD card. You can also use Dropbox and sync your apps to the cloud (backup all apps and data and restore all but what is burned onto your chip). Your choice.

For 2: Answered above better than I could.

For 3: You can remove bloatware (instead of freezing) which frees up memory, makes your unit faster, and saves battery usage. You can remove standard stuff like the browser and use dolphin instead. There is very little you can do with the stock browser. Same with mail. I use maildroid. Once you start looking around, you'll replace your movie player and all kinds of stuff. You are root, so you can browse your phone and see exactly what you have and what is going on. You can move appropriate files to your external SD, which you can get up to 32gb.

It's a really long list. But the main point is that you can go from a prepackaged unit that your provider wants you to have to a customizable phone that is the way you want it. It's not for everybody. You have to like to tinker and either be very thorough or a bit of a risk taker.

For 4: Everything. You really need to read the forums thoroughly to know where the land mines are. The actual hazards depend on what you decide to do once your phone is rooted. Just make sure not to lose power during the rooting process is the main one to start with, I guess.

So you still did the OTA update while it was rooted and it still worked? I thought you couldnt do the update unless you had ALL the bloatware back on it, and unrooted, before you could?

lol Most of the time he will be helpful, but catch him on a bad day and its FLAME TIME haha, excuse his comment about the 100th time...I had all my bloatware uninstalled and YES I did an OTA install. Took a couple tries, but it worked...

You've already mentioned it - Titanium Backup (I prefer the paid version.) I can wipe data, install a new ROM, and within a very short period of time - install Titanium from the market, start it, allow it root access, batch restore all user apps - I have all of my apps and settings back as I had the last time that I ran Titanium. (I have it scheduled to run a backup of all user apps every night while I am sleeping.) If an app update goes bad, I can use Titanium to restore an older version that I know works (that doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.) It helps that I use a third party launcher, so all that I need to do is restart the launcher and reset the homescreen widgets that do not restore properly.

I can also use something like Root Explorer to do things like rename the camera shutter sound, which I find annoying.

I also used an app called Cache Cleaner NG to automate cleaning cached data from user apps on my old phone, but that's not so necessary on a phone like the Bionic, with lots of storage space and RAM.

This may have been answered but really dont feel like looking through this whole forum so sorry if it was said
1. If i freeze all the social stuff will that affect any of the apps i would use (messages Facebook app ect.)
2. if someone could either link or just type what the main like stock apps that just kill your battery i could care less if they took up the storage but i do care about battery so if anyone could just write the apps to freeze to save battery life.
