I always take care of my phones and have never damaged a screen. The other day my Note 8 fell 2 feet from my night stand on to carpet. It must of it the base of the night stand on the way down and cracked the screen. I have the replacement coming today from Asurion. What should I do with my old phone before returning it (transfer data, wipe phone, etc.)?
The screen looks almost normal for a few seconds then starts strobing so I might be able to run an app before the screen goes crazy. Can I do the transfer and wipe without using the screen much on the broken phone (like from the new phone or PC)?

Try to wipe for sure. Never can be too safety minded.

Transferring data probably won't work simply because it takes a few screens to verify what you want to transfer before confirming so your screen may not last long enough.

But hey, at least try... Right?

I have a huge amount of data and apps and settings etc. Got EVERYTHING moved over from my old to my new phone - even widgets on the Nova launcher I use. Use sidesync through wifi to view your old phone screen (and control it) on your PC. Connect the new phone to the old one via USB and use the Samsung SmartSwitch software to move everything over. Once you have done that and activated the new phone with the phone company, just do a hard reset on the old one before returning it.

By "wipe" you mean factory reset, right? (The device is already encrypted, so once it's been factory-reset, the data is irrecoverable.) If you boot into Recovery Mode, you should be able to factory-reset without using the touch screen.

If you don't have a remote-control app already installed and set up on your phone, I don't know if there's any way to do the data transfer without using the touch screen. If you've backed your phone up to the cloud or to your computer, though, then you don't need the phone itself to transfer data to your new phone.

What he said lol

Thanks Kruse.

Not to rub salt into your wounds, I am curious if you had a screen protector on your phone? If so, which one?

Yes factory reset

Thanks to all for the advice. Here is what I did:

When I got my replacement phone, during setup the AT&T Setup & Transfer program popped up asking if I wanted to trsnsfer anything from my old phone. I answered yes and chose the direct cable connection option. Unfortunately a permission prompt popped up on my old phone (I couldn't see it because of the cracked screen) so that wasn't going to work. Later in the setup process, the Samsung Smart Switch program popped up. Since I could still see the top 20% of my screen I was somehow able to make my way through that process successfully.

I was able to wipe the old phone by rebooting with Bixby button / up volume / power button. Fortunately the majority of that menu showed up in the top portion of the screen.

I am on AT&T and have the Asurian insurance. I processed the whole thing online Sunday. They shipped the replacement on Monday and I got it Tuesday. I have to send the phone (with no accessories) back in the box my replacement came in along with the prepaid label they sent. All in all, a pretty smooth process. The deductable was $225. However, during the process they said that since I hadn't had a claim in 12 months, my deductable was reduced to $114 which woud show up on my next bill.

And no, I did not have a screen protector on my original. My Whitestone Dome protector is coming today from Amazon.

Did they send you a brand new Note 8?

Same thing happened to me, but they sent me a different color phone, and said they don't look at color. Either way, I transferred all my data to new phone, and factory reset it. They accepted a few days later and done, very easy.

I broke mine at 2 weeks. ATT and used the assurion got a brand new Note 8 shipped to my door. Pretty straight forward to swap over I used the cable. $112.
I kept my s pen out of my old one too, my transaction was completed without issue.

Could have just said you lost your phone and now you have the old phone and the new one and not have to worry about wiping... Unethical? Yeah...
