What to do if Nexus 6p won't shut off?

Two messages appear: "YouTube isn't responding" and "Process system isn't responding". I can close the Process system msg, which then takes me to the lock screen. Entering the PW gets me to the YouTube message, which can't be closed or otherwise interacted with. Trying a soft reset by holding down the power button for 30+ seconds does nothing, nor does holding down the power and volume down buttons. The button is functional b/c it can wake the screen.

The phone does not respond in any way to incoming calls but I can see data updates behind the two messages.

Do I have any options other than waiting for the battery to die?

Engaged the flashlight to burn down the battery and the problem disappeared on recharge...at least initially. Now it's acting buggy as it did early on yesterday. Time for a factory reset, I suppose.
