Which version of Android are you running at the moment?

Yes you need to have GPS on at all times if you want to locate your phone if it gets lost.
Once you get 4.4, you can change your location settings to 'Battery saving'.

Ok thx, any ideas how to get back google-preferences apk? Doesn't seem to be on my phone anymore and locations are off

If stolen getting phone back will not work with any app. Are you going into a shady area and retrieving it? I know the cops won't waste time trying to find a single phone. On the other hand if lost these apps are very helpful.

Yep. I have no problem going into a shady area. And I have a few "hard, pipe hitting buddies" (to paraphrase Marcellus Wallace) to go with me to get my stuff back if the police can't be bothered.

Well I am 44 and thought like that many years ago. I was as bad *** as it gets. Now, I would not risk my life over a phone and yes, no matter how bad you are,, it's a risk. Once I became someone's dad that kind of stupid thinking was retired . Insurance for couch change, that's the ticket.

Google has one called 'Android Device Manager'. It allows you to ring, lock or wipe your phone remotely.
Here: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager
It come pre-installed on 4.4 KitKat, but if you aren't running KitKat, Google released the app on the Play Store recently.

You definitely don't need 4.4 to have it. We have 4.3...all notes do and Android Device Manager is installed already. Please see below.

The app will work without gps, but the accuracy won't be as good. You can still use the ring, lock, and erase options

Sorry, my mistake.

On a similar note, glad that carriers (finally here in Canada) are allowing stolen/lost devices to be reported and have the IMEI blocked.
Hopefully this will start to dissuade thefts!

buy cerberus, i couldn't explain how important it is to your phone. you can get pictures, voice, videos, location history, call log, sms and send messages to the perp' all remotely.

edit: will also survive a reset if rooted. don't be one of those who wished they could get their device 🔙
