What types of media does my Evo support?

I've got some videos I'd like to put on my Evo for watching occasionally, but they happen to be AVI files (which, apparently, the Android system won't play w/o yxplayer, and even then, they're choppy.)

That being said, how can I convert these AVI files into a file type that Android supports, and better yet, what file type would be ideal to convert to?

Lastly, is there any good freeware out there for converting these AVI files to something else? Thank you much for the help in advance!

Try and download handbrake, its free and takes a bit but i use it to convert all my avi's to mp4's, there is also a handy queue feature where you can set up a bunch of movie files and let it run overnight and it will convert them for you
