What use are wifi finder apps?

Hi, and thanks in advance. Since the razr maxx searches for wifi spots if you go to "settings-wifi", why get a wifi finder app?

It's more to find free hotspots, to allow you to plan out your day if you need to find places with free wifi.

The wifi finder apps I had in mind are the ones that have a database of available free wifi hotspots. So if you wanted to go to a cafe to get something to eat and do a little work on the web, you could check out which cafe near you has free wifi.
