What's the best course of action for greater stability?

Hey everyone, long time reader, first time caller;

I am currently running JT's superclean rom with a voodoo kernel and voodoo enabled. It's pretty snappy but there are definitely more stability issues than I would like, like small freezes and sometimes much bigger ones. I would say I have to take my battery out at least once a week to hard restart the phone. And I get those "application settings" wait/force close things from time to time.

Obviously I'm not down with that. And when my alarm clock didn't go off this morning because the phone was frozen, I was ready to get a solution for this.

So I turn to you, the good people of Android Central. Because as we approach the end of November, the idea of waiting for Froyo anymore is a silly silly joke.

Is Voodoo the way to go? If I decide to disable it, do I have to completely uninstall it? Or is that all I need to do.
Are there more stable kernels and roms? Anything I could be doing wrong?

Personally, I have stayed away from all things voodoo. Too many horror stories I have read. I am running JT's super clean on the stock kernal, and i think it runs great. No stability issues, force closes, etc...

On DI01, voodoo did not do well for me either. I was running clean .4 with a stupid fast kernel. I used 1.036 I believe. Phone was awesome.

Alright, so if I want to get rid of voodoo, I don't need to do the "completely remove" method on XDA? I can just deactivate it and flash another bad boy?

And is stupid fast hard to find now?

I would have to agree that Voodoo seemed like too much of a hassle. I have steered clear of it. JT's roms and stable non-voodoo kernels are all I have run with this phone and can't think of any major stability issues.

If it were me I would completely remove it. That being said I believe that you can just disable it and it should be fine. Don't quote me on that, though. You can find stupid fast over at XDA there's a post with geeknik's website.

doesn't completely removing it wipe my data, or is it the same kind of wipe that comes with flashing a new rom? And is there an uninstaller now?

I guess a wipe is a wipe, I just wanted to make sure nothing would wipe the other data on my sd card

There is no wipe that will wipe your sd card except formatting the sd card. I believe that I have heard that there is an uninstaller. You might check ROM Manager and see if it is on there.

Easy to find in Rom Manager, but to be honest, I've gotten the best results from the stock kernel and JT's Super Clean. Super fast, no stability problems whatsoever, and great battery life. Any time I've tried any other kernel, at best I've noticed no change whatsoever, and at worse, it significantly reduced my battery life.

HMMMMM... schplinteresting. That might be the course of action then. Does voodoo kernel decrease battery life?

And would using juicedefender have any effect on my stability at all? It seems like it's decent, but I also feel like i still don't get THAT great of battery life with it.

Hey Dan. I would say ditch the voodoo kernel and go with Geeknik's stupidfast kernel v1.1.23 UV. I run it with JT's superclean ROM and it's snappy, no hiccups or lags, and no freezing of the phone. Also, the UV kernel saves battery on the phone.. woke up at 5:30AM with full battery and it's already 10:26PM here and I still have 38% left.

I would recommend to just download this off ROM manager, it's there in the list. Love my phone with JT's rom and Geeknik's SF kernel, phone is crazy fast and responsive :)

Big. +. 1.

My phone has performed way better over stock (especially battery life) with nothing more than the super clean rom dropped on and no kernel changes. Still the occasional FC now and then but I have never ever had to do a battery pull to get the phone running again.

Thanks everyone. I decided to get rid of voodoo, and I flashed stupidfast kernel, only because i didn't see the stock kernel in rom manager. But this does seem to be working fine, and voodoo really wasn't that big of a difference after all. We'll see how stability improves. Hopefully a bit.

Another question- I flashed the gps fix as well, but now the gps button on my notifications bar doesn't work. Any suggestions as to what I should do for that?

I had the same issue but it was caused by the kernel. The newer stupid fast kernels did that to my phone. I ran (i think) 1.0.36 and it ran amazing and the gps icon worked. I'm not sure if it is still posted but I can post a link as soon as I get home if you like.

I feel my phone performs a lot better with Stupidfast and JT SuperClean, . No lag, no bloat, better battery life fo sho.

That'd be great, I can't find it anywhere.

And while I'm here, why not give one more question

Why is my battery meter wildly inaccurate right now?

flashing an older version of a kernel won't do any harm? And more importantly, am I going to be missing anything that's in the newer Kernel by flashing this version?
