What's Up with Google Play and Phantom Songs?

My problem with Google' s Now Playing is not related to not recognizing songs, instead it's almost the opposite. Now Playing on my 10 Pro XL will "identify" songs that I know for certain were not played. Phantom songs, if you will.

For example, in the morning I listen to a podcast and when I check Now Playing later in the day (to check on songs I have heard throughout the day but didn't recognize) I see that Now Playing is claiming that it heard some songs during the podcast that I know were not played. In fact, I know there were no songs played. At all. And no, it was not "bumper music" which is played when coming back from a break during a podcast.

Believe me, I know the song "Clocks" by Coldplay and I know "Something in the Air" and I also know that these songs were not played at 9:31am and 9:36am during the time I was listening to the podcast.

Another example: Google Play identified "Forever Young" by Alphaville at 7:32am on Saturday morning and I can assure you I was fast asleep!

What in the heck is going on?

I've had it happen where a song will be playing in the car next to me, outside my house, down the hallway etc, etc, etc...
I finally tracked down how it was happening to me and my phone by hearing a song faintly in the background and the phone picked it up. Doesn't always happen just when the acoustics are right I guess. Ymmv
