What's wrong with the V30s image stabilization?

Please take a look at 1:35. The V30 is way worse ... it seems stable but with one huge shake or stutter per second. It's really awkward and not only in the linked video but it happens in all the video footage of the main camera!

What is this? Very bad optical image stabilization? A bug in the electronical image stabilization? Will a software update be able to fix this behaviour?

My 5 year old phone can stabilize videos better ...

I don't normally shoot a lot of videos that way, however, without a doubt the Note is much more stable. I'd like to see it on more than one sample before I pass final judgement. In my case I would still by it because camera video isn't a concern but I could see that being a deal breaker for many consumers.

Yeah, as said above, what wonders me is the kind of instability. Maybe it's because of a problem with the EIS which can be fixed. I hope so.

Here is another sample:

At first glance it might not be as obvious, because there is no comparison with another phone, but it's definitely there. For example look between 1:55-1:58, there are two "jumps" in the video which look like beeing not handmade.

I'm guessing it's either due to the pre production software or he's using "Steady Record" which has always been considerably worse than the regular OIS. Just have to wait for final reviews but that is something I'm going to keep an eye on as I love make videos without the need for a gymbal.

That video looks really good to my eyes and I'm really impressed by how steady it was and the audio capture. Shouldn't be a problem with a small skip or so. Very nice.

Oh god... that steady record. How that passed the test to be used on the V20 is beyond me. I suppose if you like your videos to look like they were filmed in an earthquake it was good, but other than that, sarcasm aside....was that even tested before release?

Ok, so that's just an effect I can deactivate in the options? Is this "steady record" different to electronical image stabilisation?

You can turn it off. Most recommend you do. I am sure there is some "sweet spot" where the situation and target for the video is perfect, but each time I used it, it was a disaster. Turned it off and never used it again.

The video is a lot more stable looking, imo, with steady record off. I haven't used it since the first week I got the phone.

Some have theorized that function needs to "lock on" to a moving focal point, and if you have more than one moving subject in your video frame, it goes bananas.

I'm very happy to hear that the most likely reason for that behaviour can be turned off! I hope the reviewers will try to turn it off, instead of taking that shaking/stuttering for granted.

Ok, huge bummer: After doing some research I found that "Steady Record" is in fact electronical image stabilization. It's just another name for it. So LG doesn't have any usable stabilization on the wide angle camera and the front facing camera, only the main camera has its OIS. Well done LG. Either they patch it or I'm out. That's inacceptable for a 900$ dollar device, I mean look at the OnePlus 5 with its patched EIS: It's doing a great job in this regard for half the price!

Am I getting something wrong? Can't believe this mess.

Not many phones have a wide angle camera so wouldn't it be better to have wide angle without OIS than no wide angle at all?

That's not the point. The point is that the EIS, which should be used instead of the non-existent OIS, is bad.

Androidcentral claims that Steady Record only works in Full HD: https://www.androidcentral.com/lg-v30-cameras

But the second video I posted was filmed in 4k. So Steady Record can't be responsible for the shakes/stutter in the second video. Weird.

I don't know....I've never had any issues with the way things work on the V20, but I'm usually standing or sitting when taking video. The most I do is the pan the camera horizontally and vertically.

V30 is not the final retail unit yet..soo wait for the retail unit before we make comparisons

On the V20 I use UHD recording which disables Steady Record. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the V30 might have the same behavior.

When I think about it... It makes no sense to release preproduction units that aren't as good as it gets for the most part. They should be able to get the big things right for the hands on reviews. I'm not just referring to LG.
