What's wrong with the V30s image stabilization?

When I think about it... It makes no sense to release preproduction units that aren't as good as it gets for the most part. They should be able to get the big things right for the hands on reviews. I'm not just referring to LG.

I guess these units were given only for unboxing and 1st look... Not to test it or the cameras... But the bloggers can't resist a nee phone... I guess...

Please take a look at 1:35. The V30 is way worse ... it seems stable but with one huge shake or stutter per second. It's really awkward and not only in the linked video but it happens in all the video footage of the main camera!

What is this? Very bad optical image stabilization? A bug in the electronical image stabilization? Will a software update be able to fix this behaviour?

My 5 year old phone can stabilize videos better ...

Pre-production unit, can't really say for sure yet.

When will people learn that preproduction software for LG is most likely the same exact software post production. This happened last year with the V20 and they dont improve anything with their slow updates. LG uses outdated camera sensors with mediocre EIS and it clearly shows.

I've gone back and looked at the video more carefully. While I agree that the walking segment comparison is hands down better on the Note, it would not stop me from the LG even if they change nothing by release date.
If the camera is the main reason anyone is buying one of these than my suggestion is to get the Note.
There are too many other reasons I prefer the V30, therefore I can't justify getting the Note 8 or the S8.

Pretty much spot on. It happens every time with a release. "Its only the pre-release software" or "after an update it will improve"....and rarely to never does it. It's not like they are going to redesign and correct the image stabilization within a month and have it prepped to go by release. As it stands, im still beyond baffled how anyone working for LG let the stabilization be released on the V20. It would have actually been better had they simply not included it, rather than release some wonky gimmicky mode that works in only the rarest of circumstances. As I said before, I think I tried to use it 3 different times and it made it look like I was recording in an earthquake, so I haven't touched it since. Just a solid and complete waste

I prefer recording in UHD which disables it anyway. I'm wondering if Samsung and the others disable it in higher resolutions also.

Ok, huge bummer: After doing some research I found that "Steady Record" is in fact electronical image stabilization. It's just another name for it. So LG doesn't have any usable stabilization on the wide angle camera and the front facing camera, only the main camera has its OIS. Well done LG. Either they patch it or I'm out. That's inacceptable for a 900$ dollar device, I mean look at the OnePlus 5 with its patched EIS: It's doing a great job in this regard for half the price!

Am I getting something wrong? Can't believe this mess.

FYI. The ultra wide angle lens doesn’t need stabilisation. It’s so wide it’s not needed/as important. Same in some of my dslr super wide lenses.

As far as I’m aware, the hardware is pretty much final. Software. LG are definitely working on an update prior to release.

I understand where you're coming from. OIS for the main sensor is a must. Ultra wide angle lenses don't benefit in the same way.

Imho I think the V30's camera is neck & neck w/ the Note 8, maybe the Note 8 is a tiny bit better. If you compare the cameras for photography I don't think you can say one is better than the other & yeah the Note 8 video is def more stable than the V30's but I like how the V30'S counters that with some great video production software.

I think it comes down to do you want the wide angle shots or the portrait & zoom?
Do you care about your camera shooting a stable video or do you prefer having interesting video production features & very good video, but not Samsung good?

I like the wide angle and manual controls.... I'm not much of an auto shooter

I think I prefer the Note 8 camera as an entire package. But the V30 offers that cool wide angle which really comes in handy.
