WhatsApp Anti "Notification Spam" For Private Conversations

WhatsApp has this cool feature that reduces the number of sound notifications you get if people start posting lots of messages on a group you're part of, you won't hear the notifications sounds go crazy.
For example, if one or more people post 100 messages in one of your groups in a timespan of about 1 or 2 minutes, you will not hear the notification sound go off 100 times. You'll only hear it 2-4 times.
This Anti "Notification Spam" feature (I haven't been able to find out what it's really called) is very useful (dare I say, the perfect solution) because receiving a notification sound for every message can be down right annoying when there is a lot activity happening in a group.
Unfortunately, this feature doesn't seem to work for private conversations. Only groups. Or at least, I can't find a way to enable it for private conversations.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use this feature in private conversations?
Or if there's any plan to introduce it for private conversations?

Thanks!

P.S.
Please don't give me workaround solutions (such turning notifications off per group. that's not a solution).
