Whatsapp verifiying

I just installed whatsapp and a sms is sent to me for verification when I open the app for the first time. I did not verify anything yet. I can use whatsapp already without verifying anything, and without using any info in the verification sms.

What does verifying do? It seems like whatsapp is already working without verifying anything.

WhatsApp is automatically detecting verification messages nowadays. You dont need to open the message and insert the verification code in WhatsApp to verify it. And if you previously had WhatsApp in your phone and you had uninstalled it, then when you re-install it, it asks you to insert your number but does not verify as already some files exist which show that it is your account.
