When cell phones started out...

While smartphones are a necessary part of modern life, I do believe we are attached to them too strongly. Most people can’t put them down. That’s not necessarily a good thing.

I think the issue is some of us are either addicted to mobile games or social media. I know I pick mine up a lot when I'm bored or home alone just to see if I have any notifications. (I keep my phone silent). I also waisted a lot of time scrolling Facebook until I got rid of it last month.

Absolutely and that’s by design. I don’t play games but am on social media a lot. I’m trying to cut back though. I used to be a news junkie but cut way back in that. Trying to enjoy life more.

I gave up Facebook years ago, since I was sick of getting requests to play Mafia Wars and Farmville.

I got Facebook way back because my ex played Farmville with my Mom and knew what was going on with my family before me. Lmao

Now I just can't stand all the ignorance and intolerance towards one another. Post anything and someone turns it into an argument. Gave up on it because it negatively impacted my mental health.

I still think about the Motorola Micro tac elite flip phone.

Oh, those were the days. I'm 95% certain that this was the phone which my wife and daughter got; my daughter being a new driver then so the phone, by virtue of it being available, was a must have. Those were also the days (or very close to it) when Internet access was via America Online, billed by the hour(!), for home computers.

I remember those days... Back when dial-up was a thing; where my flip phone was practically military-grade because it took a beating and kept on trucking... Man! I wouldn't even think of doing those things now!

I remember hearing "You've Got Mail!" when my wife or daughter logged-on; this was when that was still a novelty. "Book airline tickets online!" That's from an AOL TV commercial. I wish I had a buck for each AOL disc which arrived in the mail; the irony was that we already had AOL. I think that they just blanket-mailed those in waves.

That's literally my opinion on all social medias. I gave them up a while ago for that reason. Now the closest I get to a social media is the AC forums lol

Addiction is usually looked at as a bad thing but there's worse things you could be addicted to. As long as you don't let it control your life in the negative you'll be Okay.

Now groups of people go to the restaurant and pull out their phones and start texting.

People can't talk to you without their cell phone in their hand.

We don't talk long. I get up and walk off.
They ask. Hey man. Where are you going..
To find somebody to talk to..you cant get off Facebook.

No need to sit and watch you.

I still remember that happy-go-lucky jingle! I sort of know what ICQ is - mostly from a Prozzak song - but apparently that was all the rage as well. Speaking of which, I do miss MSN Messenger!

I barely remember MSN Messenger. Your mention of it could be the reason I remember it at all; the power of suggestion and so forth. I see myself setting up my first laptop, a Gateway model with a 40GB hard drive and a new found friend helping me set everything up circa December of 2002. Then I could message her when I was home and forego using Sprint's Short Mail. Short Mail, another thing that I miss from a seemingly simpler and slower paced time.
