Where are Gallery files on Nexus 4?

I am trying to find out how to access the files in the "Gallery" on my Nexus 4. I am a semi-pro photographer and do a lot of photography with my DSLR camera. In the past year or so I loaded a number of pictures to my old Color Nook tablet (N2A card; CyanoGen mod). It is a good way to have a "portfolio" available, although at a reduced quality, compared to paper prints, of course.

Well, the pictures have showed up on my new Nexus 4 in the "Gallery." I did NOT transfer them there; they were "magically" copied there somehow. (I suspect Google had something to do with it.) That's OK, but I want to add and remove images as time goes by. The problem: I have searched everywhere in the (available) data structure and have not found the images. They must be on my phone. I have checked by turning off the wireless and phone connections, and the pictures are still visible. They may be in the "cloud," but they are on the phone too...somewhere.

My question: Where in the heck are the files? I have a feeling that Google has hidden them for some reason, and that the only recourse for me is to "root" the phone to reveal all files. I will do this, if necessary, but am hoping that it will not be required.

(Please note: I am NOT talking about the pictures from the camera phone. I found them quite easily. These are not the ones I am trying to access.)

Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

It seems you might be seeing the synced files from either Picasa or Google+, or it might even bee Facebook and/or Dropbox. In any case, there should be an option to show or hide these albums (or stop syncing them in your account settings). I wish I could tell you exactly where, but I don't own a Nexus 4

Im guessing the Pictures folder or the Android folder.. Most likely they will be cache images if they are synced

On the Nexus 4 they are in the "Instant Upload" folder in the Gallery. Now the question is, where is that folder located in the file structure, so that I can directly access it?

Thanks for your help.

Well, I think I found the images in Pictures/cache/com.google.android.googlephotos. In that folder are 5 Picasa folders. In each Picasa folder are approximately 30 to 35 files with a .screen file extension. The size is about right for JPGs. Obviously, I cannot verify my theory, since I cannot read the .screen files. I am still curious who "pushed" them there. I certainly did not request the transfer. How do I prevent this from happening again? They are taking up a lot of memory, and we all know, there is no way to add external memory to the Nexus 4.

I found these .screen files while poking about in my Nexus 5 usb'd to XP, in picasa folders. Got the Windows error message, tried the online service, should know better because all you get is ad push stuff. Tried something different: error message > prorgram from list > Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (XP) and a small version of a picture I'd taken with the phone opened. Then tried just simply changing the file extension, and either .jpg or .png works fine. I don't really know what I'm doing, but most satisfying! .jpgs tell you a bit more: my reduced pics are 888 x 666, ie 591kpixels instead of (Nexus 5) 8Mpixels, !50kb ish file size. With "Always open............." no fiddling about is required.
