Where do you place a mp3 to use it as a ringtone.

I ran into this small problem on my Evo yesterday and was able to find the
solution. How to use your custom sounds and ringtones on your phone for
calls and notifications.

- Access your phone via the USB drive on your PC (mass storage mode)

- You will see a folder named "media." Open it.

- From there you'll see a folder named "audio." Open it.

- In there you'll see a folder named "notications." We will get to that folder
and what it's there for in a second...

- Now while in the audio folder you'll want to create two new folders. Name
one as "ringtones" and the other as "alarms" (if you like to use custom alarms).

- Any custom ringtones that you would like to show up in the ringtones on
the phone should be dragged and dropped into the "ringtones" folder.

- Any custom alarms that you would like to show up in the alarms on the
phone should be dragged and dropped into the "alarms" folder.

-Any custom notification tones that you would like to show up in the
notifications tones for things such as SMS, E-mail, IM's, Twitter, etc. should
be dragged and dropped into the already existing "notifications" folder.

Once that is done, you should be good to go. I'm doing this on an Evo which
is on 2.1 at the moment. But I believe this should apply to almost all other devices.

Wow... Thats alot of steps to take

That works too and makes for a cleaner SD Card. Although mine is a mess already.
I hate a messy SD Card ):

You should also be able to place them in /media/audio/ringtones on your SD Card. As stated above, you will need to create the folders first.

In the past notifications sounds have always gone in /media/audio/notifications.

Except I do not have a folder called media. You get the same thing ifyou just create a directory in the root of the USB drive called ringtones. notifications and alarms work the same way.

And yes this is not just a Evo thing, but rather I believe a Android thing. :-D

They only show up for me if I put them in the folder stated above.

Also: Moved to the right forum.

Yeah I kept having to move the folders around. Then I came around to that
stickied thread in the ringtones section and saw exactly what it was that I
was doing wrong.

Neither of those two methods seems to have worked for me... Do I need a reboot or something?

***UPDATE****

I unmounted the card from my PC and the notifications showed up. :)

Once you plug it in, *and then select disk drive mode on the phone, you should see an Icon for the phone, its probably coming up with NO NAME. Click on it and then once you do that, look for the media folder, then follow the rest of the instructions. Hope that helps

Not sure what you mean exactly. The phone has to be into disk drive mode first, then you can see the files.

BTW, Mine didn't have a media folder.

Thanks BigChris....exactly what I needed...I did find the "noname"..it took awhile considering I am getting usedto the imac also..You rock..thanks..and thanks for not slamming me for being a dunderhead!

No problem, glad it worked out for you.

Ok, I followed the instructions and created the folders. I moved the ringtones into the proper folder. Now I'm trying to change the ringtone by going menu - settings - personalize - default ringtone but the ringtones I moved into the folder aren't showing up. I'm probably missing something easy and obvious...can anyone help?
