Where do you place a mp3 to use it as a ringtone.

Ok, I followed the instructions and created the folders. I moved the ringtones into the proper folder. Now I'm trying to change the ringtone by going menu - settings - personalize - default ringtone but the ringtones I moved into the folder aren't showing up. I'm probably missing something easy and obvious...can anyone help?

They should be showing up in there. Perhaps maybe a reboot of the phone might do the trick.

I rebooted the phone and the ringtones still don't show up. I downloaded them from myxer.com and I don't think they're mp3s....does that make a difference?

I don't think that should make a difference. But again I am very new to Android.
It's hard for me to give a definite answer because everything I've dragged into that
folder are Mp3's. You could use Audacity to just convert them to mp3's. It's a cool
program to have because it's also the program I use to make my own ringtones from
songs that I already have.

I downloaded Audacity and tried to open the file in the program...it said it was unable to open it. I noticed it is a .dm file...I have a feeling I'm out of luck when it comes to these 2 ringtones I want. Any other thoughts?

For the EVO, I was not able to see a sub-directory on the SD card called media. So I combined Cory's instructions with the set given to get this.

• Connect your EVO to your computer using the USB cable.

• Open Windows Explorer and click on the drive for your phone (maybe F or G)

♦ Create a directory on the "root" (main) are of the drive called "media".

♦ Within "media" create a subdirectory called "audio."

♦ Within "audio" create subdirectories for alarms, notations, and ringtones:
X: (or whatever drive letter is given to your phone)
- media
- - audio
- - - alarms
- - - notifications
- - - ringtones
• Copy ringtones to the ringtones sub-directory (typically under 30 seconds)

• Copy notifications (email, texts) to the notifications sub-directory (typically under 4 seconds)

• Copy alarms to the alarms sub-directory (typically under 4 seconds)

• Right click on the X: drive and click "Eject" or "Safely Remove"

• From the EVO tap Menu → Settings → Sound & Display
- - Phone Ringtone to set your ringtone
- - Notification Sound to set the notification

• Set your Alarm tones through the Clock app → Menu.

[Updated to show how to set alarms]

I ran into this small problem on my Evo yesterday and was able to find the
solution. How to use your custom sounds and ringtones on your phone for
calls and notifications.

- Access your phone via the USB drive on your PC (mass storage mode)

- You will see a folder named "media." Open it.

- From there you'll see a folder named "audio." Open it.

- In there you'll see a folder named "notications." We will get to that folder
and what it's there for in a second...

- Now while in the audio folder you'll want to create two new folders. Name
one as "ringtones" and the other as "alarms" (if you like to use custom alarms).

- Any custom ringtones that you would like to show up in the ringtones on
the phone should be dragged and dropped into the "ringtones" folder.

- Any custom alarms that you would like to show up in the alarms on the
phone should be dragged and dropped into the "alarms" folder.

-Any custom notification tones that you would like to show up in the
notifications tones for things such as SMS, E-mail, IM's, Twitter, etc. should
be dragged and dropped into the already existing "notifications" folder.

Once that is done, you should be good to go. I'm doing this on an Evo which
is on 2.1 at the moment. But I believe this should apply to almost all other devices.

I followed your steps, and it worked great...

Okay, I'm bumping this because I'm having a problem. Now that I'm on 2.2 I'm not seeing
the "media" folder anymore. I'm digging deeper into this and hopefully find a fix. Meanwhile
maybe someone might be able to tell me what's going on please?

Update: Okay, turns out all I have to do is create the folder on the SD card. Doesn't
matter where it's placed.
