Where is the grid controls for icon position, please?

I would like to put the icons a bit closer together. And also to make the screen display the name of on-screen folders.
I got myself a phablet because I can't see anything on a smartphone screen. I found how to make larger text and larger icons,
but larger icons come with more space between icons. I read I had to change the grid settings (one more row and one more column).
But I can't find the grid controls.
All advice welcome.

That depends on the launcher you're using. Many stock launchers don't have an option for this, but if you use a 3rd party launcher like Nova, you have much more control over the layout.

What's the brand and model of your tablet?

But when you look on the tablet it says android 10.

These no-name/off-brand devices typically have a pretty basic launcher, made to look either like the stock Android launcher or the Samsung One UI launcher. In any case, they probably won't have that degree of homescreen customization. Give Nova Launcher a try. The free version gives you a lot of control. I paid for the premium version, which is even better!
