AdFree... won't work on the evo until it is rooted, but I'm sure that won't take long as the attention to that phone is high

Handcent SMS (stock app is good, this one is better)
Linda File Manager (unlike astro, this has a built in apk launcher, so you can sideload apps without having to download another app, plus its fast and does everything i need, I barely need a computer for anything phone related. I download roms right onto the phone from the interwebs, and move them to the root folder with this app).
mobile package tracker (kinda like prepacage... but cheaper)
photobucket (use it to upload photos automatically then post here as it give me the HTML link easily (tap to copy))
Pure Calendar widget- better than the stock HTC cal. widget and its skinable to make it look how you like. It syncs with gtasks, so I put two widgets one for cal. one for tasks.
Trapster- I made a windshield mount for my phone (i will make one for my next phone, too as it was easy as pie) and itll let you know about active traps in the area.
Urbanspoon- just like the iphone app (maybe not as pretty) works well
Don't even bother with Sprint Nav. It was nice on the 1.5 hero since google nav only works with 1.6+, but i've used it on my hero running 2.1 and it blows it away. Just tell the phone (by voice) where to go and in 2 seconds, you've got a route.
I also like epocrates, works better than lexi-comp and is free. It also has pill pictures which lexi doesn't.
