Which audio codec?

Took a video with my phone, transfer it to my computer and converted it to video for Android SD High. As I was transferring it back to my phone I got a message that the audio codec was not compatible. I've tried MP4 MP3 and WAV. The video plays but I get no audio. What audio format do I need to use? Thanks

I forgot to mention that the converting software I used was VLC
