Which instructions to follow (Rooting and generally)?

Since the instructions to root seem to change due not only to OS updates, but also to other OTA updates from the manufacturer, I'm really leery of attempting anything in this regard. Particularly troubling is the fact that this forum seems to allow posters an unlimited update, which means that the members who post what appear to be the "rooting instructions of record" for any given make and model of phone, could be maintaining those lists of instructions to keep up with the changes in the operating environment. But do they actually do it? I can't blame them if they don't; it would obviously be an onerous task. But I'd almost prefer it if this site didn't have an unlimited edit window, because then it would be more clear. The knowledgeable folks who provide these detailed instructions for us could revise their OP's by subsequent posts.

Side question: should I wait until I get a bigger micro SD card before I attempt to root? My Optimus S came with only a 2GB card.

The guide for rooting software version LS670ZVH (guide in the stickies) is the most updated guide available, and is updated/revised when the need arises.

It would not make sense to have updated instructions be in new posts because that would create needless amounts of threads/posts just for one guide.

If any guide becomes unmaintained for any reason other than the software version for which it applies being outdated, a knowledgeable person will create a new one.

Did you just do a review of the site within your question?! Well done sir, well done....

Personally I dont do ota updates when using custom mods. The instructions are well maintained and the devs are active in the forums. I'd rank this forum in my top 3 (especially since its the only forum I read lol =)

Everything in the ZVH rooting post is up to date AFAIK. It includes links to the rooting methods for all previous versions. If there is something out of date, let me know and I'll fix it.

It is up to you with the SD card. If you are just moving stuff to SD card using the standard android stuff then it would move over to a new SD card without that much difficulty. If you are going to run one of the scripts that move your whole /data to sdcard, then maybe wait until you get a larger SD card to do that operation, but you can root right now regardless.

If you're planning to use roms other than stock, I'd suggest a little bigger, only for keeping pertinent files. I used a 4gb card with no problems. Also, what sw version are you currently?
