Which keyboard

I'm trying to decide between Android and Swype. I really like the voice to text option on the Android - maybe eventually I'll use that for long texts and the swype for quick ones? Also, Swype seems to offer extra alternate symbols - don't know if they'll be useful to many people though.
BTW, I saw a friend's Droid (the one with the slide-out physical keyboard) yesterday - it only offers one keyboard style, which in plain vanilla compared to any of the Captivate keyboards. I guess having 3 keyboards to choose from is a feature added by Samsung? Do other new Android phones offer multiple keyboards? N1? Evo? DroidX? Incredible?

it took me a minute but i dig it now. just go into memo and start writing stuff until you get it.
the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog haha...

Use the Swype tutorial, it is great for using the keyboard. I love swype, type much faster than surepress on my old Storm.

swype takes a little practice to get the hang of. Once you understand it though you don't want to ever go back.

If I recall correctly the guys who runs this site, Jerry and Phil both were anti swype in the beginning but now the support the keyboard.

As for default keyboards .. I believe al the manufacturers create their own keyboards

Swype itself is a licensed technology. Samsung pays the creators of Swype to allow its use on their devices. Swype is not available on Android Market.

The owners of Swype foresaw potential problems with monetizing their app through the market. Instead they decided to deal strictly with the OEM's on licensing deals.

I liked the Samsung keyboard the most initially but giving swype half a chance changed all that, one hand swyping is faster and about as accurate as the other keyboards. they all take some practice and IMO it is better to practice on swype as you will get better results in the long run. Only thing is I wish it had some features of the other keyboards, and I don't like the pop-up word suggestion design.

I am trying the SwiftKey beta right now though and really liking that a lot, it is crazy accurate and somehow easier to fix things than the other keyboards. I am trying to NOT hit the right keys and it still figures out what I'm writing, so this may be a good alternative too.

i am going to try and practice with swype. i found that it takes up a lot of memory in running services. 16mb

does anyone use swype with their thumbs like they do all the other keyboards? or does everyone hold the phone in one hand you use their index finger to swype

I like Swype better than the stock keyboard because I can enter text faster with it. Plus the stock keyboard doesn't have the option of long pressing the letter that corresponds with numbers and symbols to select instead of switching between "abc" and "sym." I really liked that feature with the Aria and was glad to see it on Swype.

I sideloaded a Mutlitouch keyboard that was on one of these sites. It was Awesome. The guy made a couple in differnet colors to suit your needs. Id try to take a look for it if I were you. Its pretty sick! I think its the Evo keyboard.

I like smart keyboard pro. It has the long press option to use ABC/123
I liked the stock one as well. The size of the droidx has allowed me to be able to easily type on all the kbs and that I can choose is such a great selling point for me.
I just love android and am glad I chose it for my first smartphone.

i've been using swype for the last day and it is really cool. i like that it has the arrows for editing text. i just find it hard to do one handed. anyone else have this issue

I swype all day with one finger. I never swype in landscape mode.

Depends on the size of your hands I guess.

well with one finger ya. but one handed I have problem. i have to hold it in my left hand any use my right index finger to swype. i have trouble holding it in my right hand and using my right thumb to swype

ya i find that if i get too frustrated i can always type on it. the editing options are incredible compared to the other 2 keyboards. it can get a bit confusing when you have a long word and get side tracked half way through
