Which Media App plays from bluetooth?

I am a new convert to Android from iPhone and I've started off with a Nexus 4. I have what is probably an obvious question:
When I use a bluetooth audio stereo headset to listen to music, if I press the play/pause button before I go into any app, music from my device starts playing (from the first alphabetically listed track). However it's not coming from the Play Music app because if I then open Play Music and choose a track and press play (it's not a pause button when I enter the app) it starts playing that music ASWELL as the audio already playing from the bluetooth press.
My question is this - which app does the bluetooth headset control actually start?
It happens after I installed Headset Droid too. When that is set to "no specific target" as the "Target media player" it plays from some other app that I can't find when i use a wired headset (the iPhone one) and press the play/pause button on that.
I assume that the Play Music app is the "stock" one on the Nexus 4? I can't seem to find any other media players...

I stream bluetooth in my car all the time using either google play or Pocket Cast for my podcasts. When the bluetooth connects, it will start playing whatever app was last playing. So if pocketcasts fires up, i have to go into my phone, pause that, and then start playing through google play (and vice versa).

I know what you mean. That's how the iPhone works, but this is frankly odd. It will always go back to some other playlist, even if the last thing I was using was Pocket Casts, it seems to want to play music from the Play Music app, but, like I say, when I open the Play Music app, it doesn't appear to be playing.

That is odd - can you replicate the issue after a reboot?

What other audio apps do you have installed?

Do you have any music stored on the device, or is it all in the cloud?

I am on stock 4.2.2, and I haven't rooted it. I have Play Music, Pocket Casts and Amazon MP3 player. The problem existed before I installed the Amazon app. I have a lot of music in the cloud, and some of it "pinned" into the device. It appears not to care whether the music is in the cloud or on the device.
The issue is the same after a reboot, and yesterday, I found a colleague at work who also has a Nexus 4 and his device behaves the same, apart from the fact that after the bluetooth starts the music playing, opening the Play Music app and pressing play starts the queued track and stops the one started by the bluetooth headset, whilst mine plays both simultaneously.

I have had no problems on mine. I normally use jet audio as it does fade in/out when I switch songs. Whatever app I am using starts working as soon as I pair to my car's bluetooth. Mine is a "microsoft sync" based system. I have not used it anywhere else.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to connect a different bluetooth headset and see what happens. Aswell as uninstalling any other apps remotely connected to playing music.
