Which phone should I replace my HTC One m8 with?

I broke the screen of my HTC One m8 the other night and it's going to cost around $110 to fix, so I figure I might as well pay a little extra and just get a new (used/refurbished) phone. What would you guys recommend as a step up from the m8 that I could find for under $150?

I don't have any special requirements, I'd just like something that runs smoothly and isn't too much bigger than the m8.

Most of the name brands are good (although I'd be wary of Motorola - it's a trademark owned by Lenovo for the past several years).
