Which Root method if any...

Hey Lefty Drummer,

I just wanted to let you know that yesterday I took the plunge and went through with the update. I did not have to drop down to 4.3 and was able to just dive right in and all went smoothly (after figuring out that one of Bean's steps involved using Odin, and luckily I had it and am familiar with it, because his wording made it seem like that step was to be done while in Safestrap). Nevertheless, it worked out fine.

As usual, I have to say "THANKS SO MUCH" for all of your help and assistance with instructions, links and everything. You're the best!

Hey Lefty Drummer (or anyone reading that can help),

I was recently having TERRIBLE LAG on my VZW Note 3 running KK rooted 4.4.2 NC4. I had uninstalled Safestrap a while ago since I had no plans of using it. However, I decided to do a simple Factory Data Reset and start over to hopefully clear up all the problems I was having, so since I still would always get the Safestrap splash screen at start up, I used that to select "recovery mode" at boot and then selected "wipe cache," "wipe data," "and system" to clean everything up. It seemed to do it with no problem but once done and selecting to reboot I found that the phone now just sits there with the words "Galaxy Note 3" and NEVER boots up anymore!!!

I'm stuck right there and can't get any farther. I'm assuming the only thing I can do now at this point is to flash the phone, but the question is with what version? I've found a few different sets of instructions for going to rooted KK (NC4) but nothing that talks about doing it from already being on NC4 (especially since some instructions talk about installing other things first like Safestrap but I can't install anything since the phone won't even boot up).

Can anyone point me to a rooted (odex or deodexed) version of rooted Kit Kat (NC4) that I can flash right now since I'm stuck and can't boot?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.

Sorry to hear your troubles. I think you borked the system when you told Safestrap to wipe the system. That's more than a FDR, I believe. You may have to take the long road back, meaning Odin 4.3 and come forward from there. It's a real pain in the behind but it should work. I don't think, unless someone like Beans over at XDA has specific instructions, you should try to put NC4 on your phone. For one thing, to put that rooted version on your phone you need to get into recovery to flash one of the two files. Doesn't sound like you can do that. Look back over previous posts for links and instructions on how to get 4.3 on your phone and go forward from there. You may remember that's what I had to do when I bricked my phone. Same bootloop at the beginning of power up that you seem to have. Good luck!

Let me add the good thing about that rooted version of NC4 is precisely that you can go backwards for disaster recovery such as this.

First off, THANKS as usual for your help/reply LD! You are truly a lifesaver. I still have images of MJ7 and MJE (can't remember off hand which is newer than the other) but do you think I can simply go into Odin and flash either of those just to get back up and running, and then follow the older instructions we discussed before to get back to KK (NC4)? Also, just wondering if I might loose root, which I think I will?

Yes of course you will lose root. Once you get one of those versions loaded you'll have to reroot to get back to the rooted NC4, since you'll need Safestrap to do so.

I just Odined back to MJE successfully. I can do some research from here to try and get rooted and back to KK NC4 later tonight hopefully, but at least my phone is working again. I can't express how much I appreciate all of your time and help, and don't know what I would have done with you and the Android community. Much LOVE LD!!!!!!!!!

P.S. - and it is even sweeter to know that the help came from a fellow drummer like myself. Hopefully one day I will be able to return the favor. I am also a true believer in karma, so I'm sure good things are in store for you within time...(so if you hit the lottery next week, don't forget me). lol ;^)

Hey Lefty Drummer,

Sorry to bother you again, but I'm almost done getting all the way back and I have reached out to Beans directly but have not gotten any response from him. I have finished using Odin to get back to MJE as mentioned, and have now also re-rooted, reinstalled SafeStrap 3.65 and I'm about to flash KK (NC4) but Beans new instructions are not very clear, I think he is leaving out a few small steps that if done incorrectly could be problematic. His instructions are:

Retail Instructions
Coming From NC2/MJE
Step- 1 - Make sure you are on any rooted rom running safestrap

Step- 2 - Boot into Safestrap Select Stock Slot

Step- 3 - Wipe Data Factory Reset The Stock Slot

Step- 4 - Flash nc4 deodex rom to the stock slot

Step- 5 - Reboot into Download mode From Safestrap

Step- 6 - Flash NC2/NC4 Updated! Firmware/Bootloader Package Here

Step- 7 - You will Boot into a Stock Deodex rom with Root, Busybox, Init.d, Selinux Permissive, Insecure Modules!!

Step- 8 - Install new safestrap and wait for roms Here

However, he completely left out all the small steps to setting up Odin (maybe thinking everyone knows what to select), but considering all the trouble I've had, I don't want to get this far and check or uncheck the wrong thing in Odin and screw up something! Therefore, I'm assuming in Step 4 that I should only check "Auto Reboot" and "PDA"? Also in Step 6, with him calling it both a "Firmware/Bootloader Package" should I again check "Auto Reboot" and "Bootloader" and use the bootloader box/option, or should I still check "PDA" and use the PDA box/option? I'm finding it confusing since he's calling it BOTH "Firmware" and "Bootloader"...which one am I flashing it as???

I'm assuming that clicking just one "wrong" little box can ruin EVERYTHING since that's how I got in this mess in the first place, by checking that one extra box (the clean "System" box) in Safestrap's recovery as you have thankfully now pointed out to me, so now I am being extra, extra careful.

Sweeeeeeeeeet! I'm FINALLY back to rooted Kit Kat (NC4). Now I just need to put everything back to my liking...which will take a few days with over 600 apps/HD games and utilities, but so what...I'm back to KK. THANKS A MILLION LD. I was really nervous about checking off any wrong boxes in Odin. I never heard back from Beans by the way, so again, you are a lifesaver and I can't thank you enough!

If I can ever be of assistance, don't hesitate to ask (however send me a PM just to be safe, since I don't get time to view these forums as much as I used to). Take care.

Glad to hear it! I wouldn't take it too personally, Beans probably gets swamped with help requests.
600?!? Damn! I don't envy you that task.
God Bless the developers!
