White Box on Lock Screen

What exactly is the purpose of the white box that appears on the lock screen of my note 3?

A strange portal into another world.

OK, not.

It's weird, but it serves as a sub-lockscreen. If you unlock your device, it'll go either to the last app you had open or directly to the homescreen. If you tap on a lockscreen notification (like SMS) or lockscreen widget that supports it (like DashClock), the mysterious white box appears. Now, if you swipe your finger INSIDE the box, your device unlocks but it now goes directly to the app that summoned the notification.
