white dot in top left notification bar

Welcome to Android Central! If it's one pixel, it might be a dead pixel, or perhaps something related to the underlying wallpaper. Do you still see if when the status bar isn't there? What if you play a YouTube video that has a black screen, and make it full screen -- do you still see that dot?

I'm attaching two photos that illustrate the phenomenon. One is plain, and the other is edited.

The dot does not always appear. And sometimes it flashes.

I have the exact same dot, except mine is on the right hand side and I have absolutely no clue where it came from or what it means. I'm also gonna attach a screenshot. I have a Motorola One 5G.

Welcome to Android Central! That might be an overflow indicator, meaning there are more status bar icons on the right side than can fit. Try turning off the option to show the battery percentage and see if the dot goes away (since the percentage takes up a bit of space).

Just recently I have this white dot that is in the top left hand corner of my notification bar. When I pull down to see what it is, there is nothing. Tried rebooting the phone, looking at recent apps that I've installed to see if that's the culprit, and now I give up and come to this forum looking for help. Anyone have any idea what it is?

---------------------------------

The white dot on the left is when you have a pending voicemail, clear your voice mailbox to clear the dot. Feel free to test this when you see the dot, clear and properly exit your voicemail to see it disappear.

The white dot on the right comes on when you turn on mobile data. This can be turned on and off in the drag down notification thingy. Feel free to test it on and off to see that it dictaes if the white dot comes on or not.

I discovered these once and for all by turning off things one by one, until they vanished. Then I turned the same ones back on to see if the dot comes back.

Tried and tested,

Left white dot = V. mail pending

Right white dot = Mobile data (on)

Welcome to Android Central! It has nothing to do with anyone bugging your phone. Think about it -- if a person was trying to bug someone else's phone, why would the bugging app announce itself with a notification?

It's an overflow icon. I have more notifications than what fits.

I suddenly have this same dot. It showed up 3 days ago. The night b4 it appeared, I had a pop up saying I was signed out of my Verizon app. When I signed back in it said I needed to verify it was me with 2 boxes for my 1st name & last name. As soon as I hit NEXT.. I knew I shouldn't have. Somebody was fishing for my name on my account. I went back to my Gmail & realized 2 emails from Verizon, a week old, that were phishing emails.
Next day Verizon App Manager has installed 12 apps!
I think this dot, is something to do with changes to my Verizon account or with my Google account. Which suddenly now is showing 2 identical devices signed into my Google

Welcome to Android Central! If you know it was Verizon App Manager, then it doesn't sound like phishing. Verizon App Manager sounds like a pretty annoying "feature" that Verizon throws at its customers, but it's not technically malware. There are steps to disable it in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/verizon/comments/f80ph0/verizon_app_manager_installing_apps_without/

So.. mine "was" a notification. Unfortunately, I changed a few of their toggles as I was checking my notifications & then I realized it disappeared. I had a download arrow in THAT SPOT 10 mins later with a matching arrow in the notifications from Chrome that said Google sever down. When I tapped it.. IT BROUGHT ME TO THIS PAGE TO AN ANSWER FROM SOMEONE ELSE!
How the hell could THAT happen?
My phone was hacked after missing for a day 2 weeks ago & everything is wacky ever since!

This is what showed up when the dot disappeared.
Now I'm thinking it could be a notification that's ON but the sound is set to SILENT.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in that first statement. Altho I've never had Verizon App Manager on this phone B4..& it showed up when all these apps did... The emails were phishing emails asking me to verify my account also. The return email had ecrmemail.verizonwireless.com
I looked it up. It is verified phishing by Verizon. (It looks like my first post has missing info, & been a little jumbled.)
Also my OfferUp account is hacked. & all of my settings keep being changed drastically with what appears to have the intention of blocking my calls & notifications for OfferUp & Verizon.

The attachment option won't show when I am posting?

I edited your screenshot to block out your email address, for your privacy.

If it's from Verizon, it's not technically phishing. Phishing is a malicious attempt to lure you into downloading malware or revealing sensitive information by trying to fool you into thinking you're actually being contacted by a legitimate company or agency.

This sounds like something you'd need to discuss in detail with Verizon.

Re: white dot in top left notification bar SOLVED 4 MY DEVICE!

Correct. But as I said this email is from a VERIFIED phishing scam that Verizon posted online 2 yrs ago. I did chat with Verizon who advised me to delete the email, change my password & DO NOT click the link (which I never did). Hardly a good security measure when I've been compromised! I guess you should always open the providers address for verification! All of my accounts using this Google account are compromised now. My sales have halted and I haven't received one message in almost a month!
BUT! today I went to do a hard reset & noticed the dot disappeared when I shut off my hotspot (which is almost always on) Apparently I wasn't being very observant b4. I toggled it on & off several times & it kept getting replaced with this alarm clock icon when it was off. Once I accepted giving permission to the clock THE DOT DISAPPEARED.
It seems to have been a NOTIFICATION DOT ..in my case, for a PERMISSION. Specifically my clock. I "think" it can be for any notification (but specifically a permission?)
If someone else could verify theirs is also a notification for a permission it could help verify my find.

This is the dot I have been noticing every now and again. It will appear and disappear randomly, anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, i'm having it...but only when i start to type....i wonder if someone is Spying on my keyboard

Welcome to Android Central! Spyware is highly unlikely, as long as you follow some common sense guidelines:

“I’ve been hacked” - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com
[GUIDE] How To Avoid Malware - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

Looking back at the specific post you quoted, it's not clear what that faint dot represents. If nothing shows up in the notification panel, then see if it still occurs in Safe Mode. If it doesn't, then you know it's due to some 3rd party app you installed, rather than the system.

Welcome to AC!
You have a better chance of someone spying over your shoulder then in your device
