Seems like the proximity sensor uses some sort of sound device. With screen turned off in a dead quiet room place the earpiece next to your ear for a few seconds. Then with the screen still off move it away and try again. White noise emits from the built in earpiece that goes after a few seconds of holding it against your head , click type noise as the sound ends.
Test conducted with the screen off, and a little light shake of the device before placing it to your ear.

Wow. Mine did this as well. I repeated it three times before coming back to respond. The first time sounded like a person's breath. Why would they do this?

Not sure to be honest. But the click it makes when it finally turns off after a few seconds is obvious if the white noise isn't in a quiet room. Then with the screen still off gently shake phone and place to your ear. Same thing happens. I think it's do with the proximity sensor system used.

I messed around with it last night and read up some. There's a few app developers that put this on the apps as well. It seems that is a proximity for using the ear piece vs speaker on the phones. Unsure but maybe that's the case.
