Updates come from Motorola through your carrier(unless you buy the unlocked model) just like every other non Nexus or gpe phone. Those are the only phones that get updates "directly" from Google.
Unfortunately Verizon does not like the Pure Edition version of the Moto X (2014). The Pure Edition will get the update directly from Motorola and does not contain any carrier bloat. The Pure Edition is the closest to a Nexus device without being a Nexus. Even with a Nexus device on Verizon you will run into a delay because Verizon still has to get their figures into the mix.
But otherwise for the most part the above comments are correct, a Verizon Moto X (2014) has to go through Verizon and will be delayed for their testing.
